Montani Consulting, LLC Human Resource Generalist Remote · Full time Company website

Montani Consulting is a small, fully remote HR consulting firm that partners with small and mid-sized businesses to build stronger, healthier workplaces. We're hiring an HR Generalist to be the day-to-day, go-to HR contact for an assigned set of clients, handling everything from employee relations to onboarding, offboarding, and policy questions, and using good judgment about what to solve directly versus when to loop in leadership. This is a role built for someone who wants real ownership over client relationships, not just a task list. You'll work closely with a small, sharp team, and with clients who genuinely need and value what you bring.

About Montani

Montani exists to help organizations build stronger businesses through their people. We believe HR should be practical, strategic, approachable, and deeply connected to the realities of running a business. Our goal isn't simply to keep clients compliant — it's to help them succeed. We're a fully remote team partnering with organizations across a variety of industries, helping leaders solve people challenges, build stronger systems, and create healthier workplaces.

Role at a Glance

Compensation: $60,000–$80,000, depending on experience

Employment type: Full-time

Classification: Exempt

Location: Fully remote within the United States

Schedule: Core hours of 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM Eastern, with flexibility outside of those

Travel: Minimal; occasional client visits or team gatherings, typically a few times per year

Role Purpose

The HR Generalist independently handles routine HR matters and day-to-day tactical support for an assigned set of Montani clients — executing work and coordinating across questions, issues, and projects as they come up — and uses sound judgment about what to solve directly versus what to bring to the HR Director. This role is the client's reliable, go-to HR contact.

What Makes This Role Different

You'll work with clients who genuinely need you: a family-run business that's never had experienced HR support, or a client whose only HR person is out on leave with no backup plan. That means stepping in with confidence, following Montani's systems while also trusting your own judgment, and staying flexible when busy seasons hit harder than others. In return, you get real autonomy over how and when you work, more variety than most Generalist roles offer, a genuine path toward HR Director, and a small team that has your back and values your ideas.

For the clients on your list, you are their HR team. They don't typically have a large internal HR department of their own to fall back on — you're the person they call when something HR-shaped goes wrong. The quality of your work and your judgment shapes whether they trust Montani or start second-guessing the relationship. It's a role built for someone self-directed, comfortable moving between client-facing conversations and behind-the-scenes execution, and trusted to get it done either way.

You won't be figuring any of this out alone, though. The Montani team is small, but it's sharp — HR people who know their craft, show up for one another, and genuinely enjoy the work (and each other's company). And the clients you'll support aren't just names on a list — they're business owners and leaders building something special, the kind of people you'll look forward to working alongside.

The pay and benefits may not always match those of a large corporate HR role at this level. What you get instead is a different kind of work-life — flexibility, ownership, impact you can experience on a regular basis, and a team you'll genuinely enjoy being part of.

Key Outcomes You Own

  • Smooth operations: assigned clients experience consistent, accurate day-to-day HR support — employee relations, onboarding and offboarding, and policy questions — without anything falling through the cracks. You know when something needs to be escalated and do so in a timely manner.
  • Sound judgment: HR issues get resolved thoughtfully, with appropriate documentation, in line with Montani's communication standards.
  • Client-ready work: the documents, correspondence, and projects you produce need minimal revision from your HR Director before they reach a client.
  • Client confidence: your assigned client contacts see you as the person who has their HR handled — and genuinely enjoy working with you.
  • Client retention: because you own the daily relationship, you carry meaningful accountability for whether your assigned clients renew or expand their engagement with Montani.
  • Follow-through: you see things through to the end, meeting or exceeding the commitments we've made to clients on timeline and quality — without needing to be chased.

What Success Looks Like

  • 30 days: Up to speed on assigned clients' handbooks, systems, open issues, and history — shadowing your HR Director on client-facing work and getting familiar with each account's unique needs.
  • 60 days: Actively contributing behind the scenes across your client accounts — for example:
  • Supporting client onboarding and offboarding, and assisting with leave administration
  • Helping prepare monthly and quarterly client updates
  • Managing monthly healthcare and benefits audits
  • Keeping clients' recurring HR calendar, SOPs, and Asana boards current
  • 90 days: Handling routine day-to-day HR support for your clients on your own, meeting Montani's communication standard, with your HR Director stepping in only on matters outside routine.
  • 4 months: Fully owning the day-to-day relationship for your client portfolio, with client contacts coming to you first as their go-to HR contact. You've identified and scoped your first meaningful project.
  • 6 months: Have taken full ownership of that project start to finish — a handbook update, an onboarding overhaul, or a significant employee relations matter — with minimal revision needed from your HR Director before it reaches the client.

What You Bring

3-7 years of HR generalist experience or a comparable HR role supporting multiple stages of the employee lifecycle, ideally including time in an outsourced, fractional, or multi-client HR consulting environment. You've owned employee relations issues, benefits questions, and compliance matters directly and independently — across more than one company or client — rather than working within a single employer's existing HR team and playbook.

Is This Role a Fit?

This Role Is a Fit If…

  • You know when to raise your hand and pull in the team, or Montani's broader network, rather than going it alone when you don't have to.
  • You're motivated by flexibility, autonomy, and impact more than a large, name-brand employer or a strict 9-to-5.

This Role Is NOT a Fit If…

  • You rely on a fixed, predictable routine — this role's priorities shift from week to week.
  • You're looking for a large, traditional corporate HR department to lean on for day-to-day questions, rather than a small, close-knit team.
