Position Title: Prairie Oaks Site Coordinator

Location: Belle Plaine, MN

Compensation: $22-$26/hour; part-time, approximately 10 hours/week

Position Summary: 

Join the growing team of the Monarch Joint Venture (MJV), a nonprofit dedicated to protecting monarchs and their migration by collaborating with partners to deliver habitat conservation, education and science across the United States. The Prairie Oaks Site Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring the seamless operation and development of Prairie Oaks as an organized and welcoming physical office space and a vibrant hub for pollinator conservation. This position is primarily responsible for overall maintenance of the 20-acre site with some administration and community engagement duties as required. The Site Coordinator is a part-time position of approximately 10 hours per week that works primarily on site in Belle Plaine, MN.  This position will report to the Executive Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

Site Maintenance (70%)

  • Ensure the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of all facilities, trails, and amenities on the campus through regular maintenance, repairs, and inspections.
  • Coordinate with contractors as needed for specialized site maintenance needs 

Administration (10%) 

  • Receive mail and packaging and alert relevant staff recipients
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, equipment, and other MJV items stored on site. 
  • Keep site tidy and organized

Community Outreach (10%) 

  • Cultivate positive relationships with local schools, community groups, government agencies, and other stakeholders to promote collaboration and participation in campus activities. 
  • Represent the MJV at meetings with local organizations as needed

Volunteer Support (10%) 

  • Supervise and coordinate volunteers assisting with various site maintenance tasks, such as weeding, gardening, etc.

Desired Skills and Experience: 

  • Experience - A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
  • Equipment - Experience using regular yard maintenance equipment, such as lawn mower, weed trimmer, gardening tools, etc.   
  • Time Management - Demonstrated ability to set and maintain a predictable schedule, manageable priorities, and forward progress for responsibilities.
  • Adaptability - Self-motivated ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal stakeholders under general guidance from manager.
  • Communication Skills - Demonstrated communication skills, including interpersonal verbal and written (email) communications.
  • Problem Solving - Demonstrated ability to use critical thinking to seek out, identify, and communicate solutions to challenges as they arise.


Physical Requirements:

This position primarily operates in an outdoor environment, which may include exposure to varying weather conditions, rugged terrain, and wildlife. Physical activities such as hiking, lifting, and carrying equipment may be required. Specific requirements include:

  • Mobility: Capable of traveling to and working from the Prairie Oaks campus in Belle Plaine, MN. 
  • Lifting and Carrying: Capability to lift and transport equipment, tools, and supplies, occasionally of substantial weight or irregular shape.
  • Bending and Stooping: Comfortable with bending down or stooping to pick up items.
  • Manual Dexterity: Proficient use of hands and fingers for operating equipment such as a lawnmower and other maintenance equipment.
  • Sensory Abilities: Ability to use sensory abilities to perceive and analyze information from computer screens, written documents, and/or verbal communication.


What to Expect

Interviews will be conducted in two phases. Successful applications will first be invited to a brief introductory interview by Zoom. A second on-site interview at the Prairie Oaks campus in Belle Plaine will be invited for successful first interview candidates. References may be contacted after the second interview. While unlikely, a potential short third interview may be requested as needed in final decision making. All candidates will be notified via email if their application is no longer being considered.
