Mithril Technologies Mechanical Engineer Somerville, MA · Full time Company website

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with 2-4 years of experience to support the mechanical design, thermal analysis and development of the hardware platform for our advanced radar system. You will contribute throughout the mechanical engineering lifecycle, from developing CAD models and evaluating design concepts to performing thermal analysis, producing engineering drawings and supporting prototype fabrication and system integration. You will work closely with the Chief Engineer and the broader team to translate system requirements into practical mechanical solutions that address thermal performance, structural integrity, packaging, weight and integration constraints. You will also help to ensure that today’s designs can evolve toward the demands of eventual space development. This is an opportunity to take ownership of meaningful engineering challenges, work across disciplines and see your designs progress from concept to physical hardware. We are looking for an engineer who combines strong technical fundamentals with practical problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity and a willingness to take on challenges beyond a narrowly defined scope.

Description

What You’ll Do

• Develop Mechanical Designs: Create and refine mechanical components,

assemblies, enclosures, mounting structures and hardware packaging for radar

systems and supporting equipment.

• Perform Thermal Analysis: Evaluate heat generation, temperature distributions,

thermal paths and component operating limits to inform design decisions and

ensure reliable operation.

• Develop CAD Models: Generate detailed 3D models, assemblies and engineering

drawings using CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo or equivalent.

• Evaluate Design Tradeo=s: Assess mechanical configurations for thermal

performance, structural integrity, manufacturability, weight, packaging and ease of

integration.

• Design Thermal Management Solutions: Evaluate and implement heat sinks,

conductive interfaces, thermal straps, radiative surfaces and other heat transfer

approaches as appropriate.

• Analyze Heat Transfer: Apply conduction, convection and radiation principles to

understand thermal behavior under relevant operating and environmental

conditions.

• Design for Space Environments: Consider thermal management requirements

across ground testing, launch and eventual space operation, including the eNects of

vacuum and changing thermal boundary conditions.

• Support Fabrication and Assembly: Work with manufacturing partners and

suppliers to translate designs into physical hardware, resolve fabrication challenges

and refine designs for manufacturability.

• Integrate Mechanical and Electrical Systems: Collaborate with RF, electrical, and

systems engineers to accommodate component placement, mounting interfaces,

cable routing, access and system-level constraints.

• Validate Designs: Support prototype assembly, thermal testing, mechanical

verification and troubleshooting. Compare test results with analytical predictions

and refine designs as needed.

• Maintain Engineering Documentation: Produce drawings, bills of materials, design

documentation and analysis reports to support development and integration.

• Iterate Rapidly: Incorporate analysis results and test feedback into improved

designs as the system evolves.

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering

discipline.

• 2–4 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, thermal analysis, product

development or hardware engineering.

• Proficiency with 3D CAD software, including the ability to develop detailed part

models, assemblies and engineering drawings.

• Strong understanding of heat transfer fundamentals, including conduction,

convection, radiation and thermal resistance.

• Ability to evaluate engineering designs using analytical calculations, simulations

and sound engineering judgment.

• Understanding of mechanical design principles, material selection, tolerances and

design for manufacturability.

• Experience translating engineering requirements into practical mechanical designs.

• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to communicate

technical findings clearly.

• A hands-on approach to engineering, with an interest in taking designs from CAD

and analysis through fabrication, assembly and testing.

• Ability to collaborate eNectively across multiple engineering disciplines in a fast

paced development environment.

• U.S. person: U.S. citizen or green card holder. Required for all candidates (ITAR).

• Clearable: Able to obtain a U.S. security clearance.

Bonus Points

• Experience with finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD),

or high-power systems.

• Familiarity with thermal analysis in vacuum environments, including the transition

from convection driven ground environments to conduction and radiation driven

heat transfer in space.

• Understanding of radiative heat transfer, surface emissivity and absorptivity, and

radiative coupling between surfaces.
