Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition

Clean Air Organizer (West Michigan preferred)

  • One-year contract position. Potential for full-time employment or a two year contract extension upon completion of the first year.
  • Start Date: As soon as possible. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
  • Compensation rate: $75,000 ($25,000 upon signing, $25,000 at 6-month mark, $25,000 at 1-year mark.)  



Contractor Description: MEJC Clean Air Organizer

Position Summary:

The Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition (MEJC) is seeking a Clean Air Organizer contractor to engage with Clear the Air, as well as various social justice organizations around the State of Michigan. The contractor will play a key role in increasing the movement's capacity and expanding its reach in West Michigan. This role will support and collaborate with the organizing team to advance clean air campaigns and programs aligned with MEJC's mission.


About Clear the Air Coalition:

Clear the Air is a collective of concerned residents, community groups, and environmental justice organizations working to protect the health of Michiganders by ensuring everyone's right to a clean, safe, and healthy environment. The coalition aims to build a stronger movement that promotes environmental justice, addresses air quality issues, and advocates for policies that safeguard clean air and public health in Southeast Michigan and beyond.


Contract Details:

This is a contractor position with an expected commitment to a specified term. The contractor will be expected to manage their own time and work independently within project milestones, with regular check-ins and collaboration with the MEJC organizing team. The contract includes all incidental costs and expenses associated with doing this work.


Deliverables: 

Ongoing Responsibilities

  • Plan and convene monthly Steering Committee meetings.
  • Serve as co-chair and/or support work groups and committee co-chairs to ensure regular meetings and progress in accordance with work plans approved by the Steering Committee.
  • Provide facilitation and note-taking for meetings, and share notes promptly.
  • Manage coalition internal communications: manage Google groups for the Steering Committee, work groups and committees, and maintain a list of all contacts.
  • Provide support for external communications, in collaboration with Engage Michigan and MEJC.
  • Collaborate with MEJC staff organizers to design and implement organizing strategies and infrastructure, fostering a cohesive and impactful team dynamic.


This Project will be evaluated by the completion of these milestones and outcomes 

  • Complete Coalition strategy development, including (a) planning annual in-person strategic planning retreat, (b) updating the current MOU into a coalition agreement (c) other tasks as needed and directed by the Steering Committee.
  • Develop and implement regular opportunities for evaluation, reflection and learning about progress toward agreed-upon goals and outcomes. 
  • Lead state-wide outreach and engagement to recruit new Clear the Air partners,  engage and educate program participants.
  • Coordinate events for Air Quality Awareness Week annually (April 28 - May 4, 2025)
  • Facilitate an annual day of action in Lansing to educate key policy decision makers.


Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in organizing for social justice movements, directing campaigns, and achieving concrete campaign objectives.
  • Strong commitment to justice and a deep motivation for systemic change, with a structured, goal-oriented approach to organizing.
  • Preference for individuals to be based in the West Michigan region, with the ability to travel regularly to Detroit and other parts of Michigan.
  • Reliable transportation for statewide travel, approximately once per month.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and community-building skills, with some experience in restorative or transformative justice practices.
  • A passion for social justice and collective governance, with the ability to work collaboratively and support collective decision-making processes.
  • Experience with organizing and base-building, utilizing best practices such as relationship management, database management, and leadership development.
  • Skilled in both listening and leadership, particularly in working with Black, Indigenous, and People of the Global Majority communities.
  • Deep care for the Earth and an understanding of how environmental factors impact human lives.
  • Ability to foster collaboration and facilitate meetings effectively, ensuring clear communication and mobilization for collective action.
  • Structured, outcomes-driven organizing experience with strong time management and task prioritization skills.
