Description

ABOUT US

Material Hybrid Manufacturing (MATERIAL) is redefining how advanced energy systems are made. We specialize in hybrid and additive manufacturing of high-performance energy storage systems, combining advanced manufacturing, nanomaterials, and electrochemistry to deliver step-change improvements in energy density, form factor, and system integration.

At STAR Park in San Marcos, Texas, our multidisciplinary research and manufacturing facility integrates chemistry, advanced manufacturing, and battery systems engineering to develop scalable, next-generation energy technologies for defense and commercial applications.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are seeking a full-time Chemist to to increase MATERIAL’s experimental throughput, consistency, and operational velocity across multiple technical programs. This role is a critical support function across nanomaterials synthesis, battery R&D, battery production, and additive manufacturing workflows.

This position supports nanomaterials production, slurry and composite preparation, battery fabrication, and QA/QC analysis under the direction of senior scientists and engineers. It is not an exploratory research role; it is an execution role that enables senior technical staff to focus on design, optimization, and system-level advancement.

You will work directly with the Lead Battery Engineer and Senior Scientist,  supporting government-funded programs, internal technology development, and customer battery projects. The role also interfaces closely with the Additive Manufacturing team to ensure materials are properly prepared, characterized, and production-ready.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare nanomaterials, electrolytes, slurries, inks, and composite formulations for battery and additive manufacturing workflows.

  • Support nanowire and advanced materials synthesis following established protocols.

  • Assist with battery fabrication, assembly, teardown, and post-test analysis for half-cell and full-cell builds.

  • Support battery testing operations, including sample preparation, labeling, data collection, and basic analysis.

  • Perform QA/QC checks on materials and battery components to ensure consistency and repeatability.

  • Maintain lab organization, chemical inventories, safety documentation, and materials tracking.

  • Execute standard operating procedures (SOPs) and contribute to continuous improvement of lab workflows.

  • Coordinate with the Additive Manufacturing team to ensure materials are print-ready and compatible with Hybrid3D systems.

  • Assist senior staff with experimental setup, iteration, troubleshooting, and scale-up activities.

  • Support government contract deliverables, internal R&D milestones, and customer project execution.

  • Document experimental procedures and results to support data traceability and reporting requirements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.

  • Hands-on laboratory experience with wet chemistry, materials preparation, or applied R&D environments.

  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and experimental discipline.

  • Ability to follow established protocols while operating in a fast-moving execution environment.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

  • Comfort working in a multidisciplinary lab alongside engineers and scientists.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.

  • Experience with battery materials, electrolytes, electrodes, or electrochemical testing.

  • Familiarity with slurry processing, composite preparation, or nanomaterials synthesis.

  • Exposure to additive manufacturing or materials for 3D printing.

  • Experience supporting DoD or SBIR/STTR-funded programs.

  • Interest in advanced energy systems and manufacturing-driven R&D.

BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary
  • Equity participation opportunity
  • Health insurance options
  • Direct hands-on experience with advanced battery and manufacturing technologies
  • Opportunity for growth as MATERIAL scales toward pilot production and commercialization
