Position Summary

The Marketing & Communications Coordinator is a multi-talented creative who serves as the voice and visual architect of the organization, ensuring Make Way for Books’ mission and work is communicated with beauty, clarity, and consistency. Reporting to and collaborating closely with the COO, this role involves switching between graphic design, storytelling, and digital strategy to translate organizational impact into compelling content for donors, partners, and beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities

Multimedia Content and Collateral Creation

  • Under the direction of the COO, design digital and print assets, including program brochures, recruitment flyers, partner toolkits, and event invitations.
  • Create and maintain user-friendly templates (Slide decks, handouts) for direct service staff to ensure professional, scalable delivery of our programs.
  • Attend literacy programs and community events to capture photos and short-form video (Reels/TikTok/Website headers).
  • Work closely with the COO to balance time-intensive projects (like video editing and event coverage) with ongoing design needs, particularly during peak seasonal periods.
  • Translate literacy impact data into accessible infographics and "one-pagers" for stakeholders.

Digital Communications & Marketing

  • Assist in the development of a multi-channel marketing plan; maintain publishing calendars for social media, newsletters, and blog posts.

  • Draft engaging blog posts and articles highlighting success stories and literacy tips, utilizing a review process to ensure tone consistency.
  • Monitor monthly analytics across platforms (social media, email, website) to identify trends. Share these insights with the team to help inform future content decisions.

Brand Stewardship & Visual Identity

  • Support the rollout of our rebranded visual identity across all platforms and physical materials.
  • Ensure internal and external materials adhere to new style guidelines; maintain an organized library of brand assets and templates.
  • Occasionally collaborate with or provide support for external freelancers or agencies brought in for high-level/complex projects (e.g., Annual Reports or long-form documentary videos).

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of professional experience in marketing, communications, or graphic design. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred, but a strong portfolio of "real-world" work is the primary focus.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Canva (for team templates) and Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Experience in photography and short-form video production.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A portfolio demonstrating graphic design (layout, typography) and photography/videography samples.

  • Familiarity with Google Analytics, social media insights, and email tracking.
  • A genuine passion for early childhood education and a commitment to the mission of Make Way for Books.

  • Professional Equipment: Provision of a high-performance workstation/laptop and a professional-grade camera for field use.
  • Software Access: A full, organization-sponsored subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud and Canva Pro.
  • Mentorship & Support: Regular check-ins with the COO for direction, prioritization, and professional development. Access to new Brand Guidelines and external support during the initial rebrand transition.
