MAKE stands for Merging Agriculture Kitchens and Employment. Our social enterprise restaurant and urban farm located in San Diego provides an exciting learning platform for our participants to gain critical social, communication and job readiness skills. We operate an urban farm and cafe to provide a paid, real-world work experience for low-income refugee and immigrant women and youth. MAKE Projects, a San Diego nonprofit employment social enterprise, is seeking an experienced Farm Manager to lead MAKE Farm’s vegetable and herb production while training refugee and immigrant women in a supportive, real-world workplace. The Farm Manager is responsible for producing high-quality vegetables and herbs for MAKE’s CSA program and MAKE Café while supervising and teaching program participants as part of their paid job-readiness training.

 

We’re looking for someone who:

• Has professional experience growing vegetables and herbs in San Diego
• Can successfully plan and execute farm production for CSA and café needs
• Enjoys teaching and working alongside people with different levels of experience and English
• Is patient, flexible, hands-on, and organized
• Gets satisfaction from helping others build skills and confidence

 

This is both a farming job and a people-development job. Success means growing great produce and helping trainees grow into confident, capable employees.

Qualifications:

·       Required Experience: 3-5 years of experience in commercial vegetable production. (MAKE Farm does not strive to become certified organic but we have always followed organic growing practices.)

·       Required Skills: Excellent inter-personal and communication skills

·       Education: Bachelor's degree preferred

·       Must have a valid driver’s license and willingness to drive

·       Must be able to lift 20 pounds, stand for long periods of time and complete all necessary farmwork activities

Work Environment:

·       Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday

·       This position primarily works at MAKE Farm located in SDSU Mission Valley with supplemental support for MAKE Café’s culinary garden in Normal Heights.

·       This position works outdoors on-site 90% of the time in the field and 10% of the time for planning, admin and meetings.

 

Compensation and Benefits: This is a full-time, salaried at $68,640 per year with health benefits, paid time off, and paid sick leave. MAKE Projects also offers a matching 401k retirement plan after six months of employment.
