About the position

This full-time role involves program stewardship and direct client services, with a combined focus on strategic direction and hands-on service. The Director of Midwifery guides the clinic’s culture, strategy, and team development while also supporting the provision of midwifery care and guiding clinical and health education programs. We're looking for someone who can both provide excellent client-centered care and “hold the whole” of the midwifery program.

Scope of Practice Based on Licensure

If licensed in the state of Texas (CPM, CNM, LM), the Director of Midwifery may provide direct clinical care, hold clinical decision-making authority within their scope, and oversee clinical standards and quality of care. If not licensed in the state of Texas, the Director of Midwifery will lead all programmatic, operational, and educational aspects of the midwifery program, and will collaborate closely with licensed providers who maintain responsibility for clinical care delivery and medical decision-making.

Essential Responsibilities

50% Program Director: Culture, Strategy, and Organizational Stewardship

Lead the Clinic Program’s Culture, Strategy & Coordination

• Provide holistic leadership and strategic oversight for the clinic program by guiding program direction, team culture, morale, conflict resolution, role clarity, and future growth planning to ensure alignment, strong relationships, and sustained impact
• Source, develop, and facilitate onboarding and ongoing training for clinic personnel
• Ensure that the team has effective communication channels with other teams, and represent the team at cross programmatic meetings 
• Serve as a learning and accountability coach, supporting the growth and professional development of team members
• Manage Clinic Program Budget

Organization-Wide Participation

• Take responsibility for ensuring the organization is accomplishing its mission by building high-trust relationships, proactively tending to tensions, speaking up with feedback/questions, and paying attention to larger organizational issues
• Participate in all-staff and team meetings, retreats, internal culture work, organizational planning & strategy, and other collaborative processes
• Participate in supervision meetings as supervisee
• Seek out and engage in ongoing professional development 
• Submit any expenses on time, ensure finances are accurate

50% Direct Client Services, Programming, and Leadership 

Clinical and Health Education Programming and Development

• Develop and oversee clinical guidelines, processes, and protocols, in collaboration with licensed providers as needed
• Create or source educational materials and client handouts
• Ensure program alignment with clinical governance standards, laws, and guidelines, in partnership with licensed providers
• Set clear expectations for midwifery program
• Communicate and collaborate with other providers

Direct Client Services

• Collaborate with clinical providers to support and/or provide high-quality midwifery care (depending on licensure) and health education, including well-person, preconception, prenatal, and postpartum care in clinic, telehealth, home visits, remote or follow-up
• Incorporate the JJ Way™ model in all aspects of care, ensuring culturally competent and client-centered support
• Coordinate and facilitate regular chart reviews and clinical team meetings, with clinical oversight provided by licensed staff where required
• Maintain accurate electronic clinical records as well as clinical data and metrics for chart compliance and data evaluation, identifying any documentation issues
• Support with triaging and managing urgent client concerns during business hours and while on call

Who You Are: 

• Experience in midwifery, reproductive health, or community-based maternal health required
• Nonprofit program leadership or program management experience required
• Midwifery licensure (CPM, CNM, LM, CM) preferred
• Clinical experience in client-centered and community-based healthcare strongly preferred
• Maintains licensure and certifications required for clinical practice, if applicable
• Fluency in English required; proficiency in French, Spanish, or Portuguese is highly desirable due to our client population
• Experience in a public health clinical setting and working with high risk populations preferred
• Proficient in Google Suite and electronic medical record systems
• Deeply committed to maternal justice, anti-racism, and equitable healthcare access
• Approaches care and leadership with a whole-person, community-centered perspective
• Adaptable and flexible, thriving in a non-profit environment where creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration are key
• Comfortable navigating evolving workflows and wearing multiple hats as needed
• Reliable, resourceful, and accountable

Job Details: 

• Full-time salaried position (35 hours/week) with required flexibility for occasional evenings, weekends, and an on-call rotation for responding to emergencies over the phone
• Mostly remote with flexible scheduling. One required in-person clinic day per week (Mondays), in-person home visits, team meetings, and retreats.
• Generous benefits package including 100% employer-paid health, vision, and dental insurance for staff and minor dependents, flexible PTO and leave policies, child and dependent care stipend, retirement plan, and flexible scheduling
• Starting pay of $72,000 annually, based on baseline experience of 2 years as a nonprofit program director. Candidates with less experience are encouraged to apply; pay will increase beyond baseline with additional relevant experience
• Reports to Executive Director
• Travel required at times for occasional home visits
