About Us
Lumos Data is a fintech startup helping small business lenders make smarter, data-driven lending decisions. We're empowering banks and credit unions nationwide with actionable insights that improve access to capital for small businesses. Based in Wilmington, NC, we're a close-knit team of ~15 (with 3 members on the data team) who value collaboration, ownership, and adaptability. If you're looking for a workplace where your ideas aren't just heard—they're eagerly awaited—then we've got a spot just for you!
About the Role
We're looking for a Data Engineer who is eager to dive into our modern data infrastructure, with a focus on Databricks, Terraform, Python, SQL, and GitLab. You’ll collaborate with our data scientists and developers to build and maintain robust data pipelines and services that power the Lumos platform. This is a high-ownership role with opportunities to work across the stack and shape the future of our data architecture. While we prefer candidates local to Wilmington, we offer flexibility for occasional remote work.
What You'll Do
-
Pipeline Magician: Craft and manage scalable, robust data pipelines on Databricks (Spark, Unity Catalog, DAB Workflows).
-
Model Whisperer: Deploy and maintain predictive models using Databricks Model Endpoints, keeping them running smoothly in production.
-
Terraform Wrangler: Automate infrastructure deployments for Databricks using Terraform, ensuring consistency across environments.
-
GitLab Guardian: While the primary focus of this role is on Databricks expertise, familiarity with Git and GitLab to keep our CI/CD pipelines humming and collaborate with teammates via merge requests, reviews, and automations is a valuable plus.
-
Problem-solving Paladin: Monitor, debug, and optimize data infrastructure and Spark jobs—keeping things speedy and cost-effective.
-
Hat Collector: In our startup, you'll occasionally wear a few unexpected hats 🎩, whether it's helping brainstorm product features or optimizing database schemas.
What We're Looking For
-
4+ years in data engineering, comfortable handling production-grade data pipelines.
- Strong hands-on experience with Databricks & Apache Spark or pyspark (bonus points for Unity Catalog, Databricks Asset Bundles and Model and Feature Serving).
- Solid scripting skills with Python—writing clean, maintainable, well-documented code.
- Proficiency with Terraform (IaC)—especially deploying cloud infrastructure.
- Familiarity with CI/CD workflows, preferably using GitLab.
- Comfortable navigating project management tools like Linear.
- Ownership mentality with a knack for solving problems independently and collaboratively.
- Adaptability and willingness to dive into new challenges—financial industry experience is icing on the cake, but not mandatory.
Why You'll Love It Here
-
Meaningful Work: Your work helps unlock capital for small businesses—the lifeblood of local communities. You’ll see the real-world impact of your contributions, whether it’s enabling a bakery to expand or a contractor to hire their first employee. It’s tech with a purpose, and you’ll play a key part in making it happen.
-
Growth Opportunities: You’ll work alongside experienced fintech professionals and get exposure to a wide range of tools and challenges. There’s room to stretch your skills across data engineering, modeling, infrastructure, and product integration. Things move quickly here, but we’re intentional about learning and helping each other grow at a sustainable pace.
-
Collaborative Culture: A close-knit, supportive culture where collaboration thrives and every voice counts. We celebrate wins big and small, often with spontaneous lunches, chess games or happy hours. (No mandatory trust falls, we promise!)
-
Work-Life Balance: We believe great work comes from a healthy rhythm of focus and rest. We work hard and aim high, but we also know that stepping away is part of doing your best. Whether it’s a midday walk or time off to recharge, we encourage our team to take the breaks they need—including real vacation time (yes, unplugging is expected). We value in-person collaboration in Wilmington, but we support remote flexibility when needed.
-
Competitive Compensation: We offer a competitive salary in the $85,000–$105,000 range, equity options to share in our growth, cell phone and gym stipends to keep you connected and moving, and unlimited vacation (with a gentle nudge to take at least 3 weeks). You’ll also get full health benefits to keep you feeling your best—because great work starts with feeling good.
