Key Responsibilities:
- Perform installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of substation apparatus including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, voltage regulators, capacitors, reactors, relays, and associated control systems.
- Diagnose and repair complex equipment malfunctions, ensuring compliance with electrical codes, safety regulations, and company standards.
- Conduct electrical and mechanical tests such as power factor, TTR, Doble, SFRA, insulation resistance, and gas analysis (DGA).
- Maintain accurate commissioning and maintenance records, test results, and equipment histories in the asset management system.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, control wiring, and manufacturer technical manuals.
- Lead and oversee substation commissioning and/or maintenance crews in daily operations, ensuring adherence to safe work practices and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Collaborate with engineers and system operations to plan equipment outages, commissioning, and energization of new installations.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, control wiring, and manufacturer technical manuals.
- Assist in the development of maintenance schedules, procedures, and equipment specifications.
- Train and mentor apprentice and journeyman-level technicians in testing procedures, safety standards, and best practices.
- Respond to substation outages, equipment failures, and system emergencies, sometimes outside of normal working hours.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Power Systems, or related field; equivalent military or utility training accepted.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in substation maintenance, testing, and commissioning.
- Demonstrated experience working with high-voltage (69kV – 500kV) systems and apparatus testing equipment.
Certifications & Licenses:
- NETA Level III or IV, NICET, or equivalent certification preferred.
- OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, and switching & tagging certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Advanced understanding of substation design, protection systems, and power equipment operation.
- Proficiency in electrical testing equipment and software (e.g., Doble, Omicron, Megger).
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and lead a small crew under minimal supervision.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 70 lbs.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions and work in confined spaces.
- Must be able to perform physical labor including climbing ladders, standing for extended periods of time, drive regularly, fly regularly.
- Must be able to perform work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to use hand tools and power tools.
Required Abilities:
- Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Complete a satisfactory criminal background check.
- Able to work overtime and travel out of town for periods of time.
- Must have a valid driver's license and currently have and be able to maintain a good driving record.
- Must be able to work legally in the US.
