Director of Youth Ministries


Overview of the Position

Our church is seeking a passionate and enthusiastic individual to lead our Youth Ministries. The successful candidate will be responsible for the continued development and implementation of programs and initiatives that support and foster the mental, emotional, and spiritual growth of youth in our congregation and community. The ideal candidate will also have a strong desire to support existing volunteers and the ability to identify, equip, encourage, and empower members of our congregation to serve as volunteer leaders in this important ministry area. The Youth Ministries Director is a part-time (15-20hrs./week) member of the Linworth UMC staff team.  They provide leadership for all aspects of ministries with youth (defined as grades 7-12). The Director will supervise volunteers and any part-time staff necessary for effective ministries in program area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be present and visible in the worshiping community of LUMC on Sunday mornings. 
  • Coordinate weekly programing for existing youth group, identifying and equipping volunteers to support our students and the program.
  • Lead major events such as mission trips and retreats with youth group and volunteers. 
  • Facilitates the design, implementation, and support of ministry team who will provide direction and leadership for discipleship ministries with youth.
  • Participates as a member of the staff team providing perspective and expertise related to age-level and intergenerational engagement in all aspects of the church’s ministry.
  • Provides innovative partnership with the Director of Family Ministries for children/family special events. 
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive volunteer recruitment, training, support, communication, and recognition process.
  • Utilizes an effective attendance and follow-up system for youth ministries.
  • Works with Director of Family ministry to review, update, and maintain Safe Sanctuaries child protection policies, training, and record-keeping.
  • Coordinates with worship leadership to effectively involve youth as participants and leaders in worship.
  • Reaches out to visitors/new families with youth to provide information about ministry opportunities at LUMC.
  • Communicates in an effective and timely manner through a variety of avenues concerning ministry activities, enabling church family members adequate time to plan for involvement.
  • Coordinate the every-other-year confirmation program, utilizing the Director of Family Ministries for partnership. 
  • Works with staff and appropriate committees to propose and manage an adequate budget for youth ministries programs and activities.
  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings. 
  • Works with Senior Pastor and SPRC (Staff/Parish Relations Committee) to evaluate and address additional staffing needs to maintain, enhance, and expand discipleship ministry for youth as needed.

The following qualifications are ideal for the Director of Family Ministries

  • A high school diploma and an undergraduate degree in ministry and/or education related fields. 
  • Submission for and passing (and maintaining) background check and fingerprints. 
  • An understanding of and appreciation for United Methodist/Wesleyan theology.
  • Local church experience with focus on youth ministry.
  • A committed follower of Jesus with a willingness to grow in faith and knowledge to enhance themselves personally and professionally.
  • A demonstrated ability to empower others in ministry.
  • A working knowledge of best practices and available resources for discipleship settings.
