Position Summary The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians in providing quality patient care while maintaining an efficient, clean, and organized hospital environment. Responsibilities include assisting with clinical procedures, patient monitoring, medical record documentation, client communication, and facility maintenance. This position works under the supervision of veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians and performs assigned duties in accordance with applicable state laws, regulations, and hospital protocols.
Primary Responsibilities
Patient Care
• Provide compassionate and humane care to patients.
• Safely restrain animals for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
• Monitor hospitalized patients and promptly report changes in condition.
• Assist with anesthesia preparation, monitoring, and recovery under supervision.
• Administer medications and treatments as directed and permitted by state law.
• Assist with surgery, dentistry, laboratory procedures, and diagnostics.
• Perform routine treatments and husbandry care as assigned.
• Prepare patients for discharge as directed.
• Walk, feed, clean, and care for hospitalized patients.
Medical Records & Client Communication
• Accurately document treatments, procedures, and observations in medical records.
• Maintain familiarity with common veterinary terminology and medications.
• Prepare and fill medications as directed and approved.
• Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients and team members.
• Support a positive client experience through courteous and respectful interactions.
Equipment & Facility Maintenance
• Clean, sterilize, and maintain instruments and medical equipment.
• Maintain clean, sanitary, and stocked treatment and exam areas.
• Follow inventory management procedures.
• Perform routine cleaning duties, including laundry and waste removal.
• Adhere to all safety, sanitation, and infection-control protocols.

Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift for extended periods
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds independently and more with assistance
• Ability to safely handle and restrain animals of varying sizes and temperaments
Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Minimum one (1) year of veterinary or medical experience preferred
• Basic understanding of veterinary terminology and procedures preferred
• Ability to safely and humanely handle animals
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Commitment to excellent client service and teamwork
$15 - $22 per hour
