Position Summary

We are looking for a motivated and dependable Commercial Refrigeration Technician Apprentice to join our team. This is an entry-level role designed to support career growth in the HVAC/R industry by learning directly from journeyman technicians. You will assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial refrigeration systems while gaining hands-on experience and technical knowledge in the field.


Kensington Mechanical’s Apprentice Program is a formal pathway to becoming a licensed journeyman technician:


  • Paid, on‑the‑job training alongside seasoned journeyman technicians.
  • A mentor‑based approach to build skills in installations, diagnostics, repairs, and code compliance.
  • Graduates are positioned for progression to paid journeyman roles in store-rack, ice machine, and facility refrigeration service work.

Key Responsibilities

Hands-On Training & Support

  • Assist journeyman technicians in performing service, maintenance, and installation of commercial refrigeration equipment, including walk-in coolers, freezers, and display cases.
  • Observe and learn proper techniques for diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical and mechanical issues.
  • Help with loading, unloading, and staging tools, equipment, and materials on job sites.

Basic Service Tasks

  • Perform routine tasks such as cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, changing filters, and inspecting equipment under supervision.
  • Carry out minor repairs and component replacements as directed.
  • Use hand tools and basic testing instruments in a safe and responsible manner.

Documentation & Communication

  • Accurately document work performed, parts used, and time spent on job tickets or digital apps.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors and journeymen regarding job progress, challenges, and learning goals.
  • Follow instructions and standard operating procedures.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including the use of PPE, fall protection, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Learn and follow EPA guidelines for refrigerant handling and disposal.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area on job sites and in company vehicles.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and eagerness to learn.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various environments, including rooftops and cold storage areas.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in construction, HVAC, or facility maintenance (even in a helper role).
  • Basic understanding of tools and safety practices.
  • Completion of OSHA-10 training or equivalent (can be provided after hire).

Work Environment

  • Exposure to cold temperatures, confined spaces, and occasional heights.
  • Variable work schedules may include early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors and in fast-paced commercial settings.
