The Senior Engineer will lead the design, development, and evaluation of energy-related projects to improve efficiency and reduce costs during construction or remodeling. This role acts as a technical lead and mentor, overseeing complex engineering systems and guiding a team toward successful project execution.
Responsibilities and Duties
Auditing, Inspection and Compliance: -
• Conduct ASHRAE I, II, III energy audits to evaluate energy use, costs, or conservation measures.
• Inspect or monitor energy systems, including heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) or
daylighting systems to determine energy use or potential savings.
• Review architectural, mechanical, or electrical plans and specifications to evaluate energy efficiency or determine engineering feasibility.
• Evaluate construction design information such as detail and assembly drawings, design calculations, system layouts, and sketches.
• Conduct job-site observations, field inspections, or sub-metering to collect data for energy conservation analyses.
• Monitor energy-related design or construction issues, such as energy engineering, energy management, or sustainable design.
• Conduct research or collect data on renewable or alternative energy systems or technologies such as solar thermal and photovoltaic energy.
• Perform energy modeling, measurement, verification, commissioning, or retro-commissioning. Create models of engineering designs or methods.
Leadership & Supervisory Oversight: -
• Manage a team of engineers
• Direct the work of staff and contractors in the implementation of energy management and conservation projects.
• Apply expertise to provide technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering their skills development and nurturing a culture of continuous learning.
• Lead and contribute to the conceptualization, design, and development of energy-efficiency systems and products, with a focus on HVAC, renewable energy integration, and smart grid technologies.
• Provide leadership and mentorship to guide and inspire junior engineers, contributing to a collaborative team environment.
• Oversee design or construction aspects related to energy such as energy engineering, energy management, and sustainable design.
Design, Modeling & Technical Development: -
• Utilize advanced engineering tools and software to design and implement strategies to manage energy demand and control consumption.
• Utilize engineering models, simulations, and prototypes to validate design decisions and facilitate technical discussions.
• Perform energy modeling, measurement, verification, commissioning, or retro-commissioning.
• Create models of engineering designs or methods.
• Design, develop, or evaluate energy-related projects or programs to reduce energy costs or improve efficiency during designing, building, or remodeling stages.
• Participate actively in design reviews, offering critical insights and proposing design optimizations to enhance energy performance.
• Identify energy savings opportunities and make recommendations to achieve more energy efficient operation.
• Make recommendations regarding energy fuel selection and technical design or process changes to improve efficiency, quality, or performance.
Stakeholder Management & Operations: -
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including energy analysts, project managers, and engineers to ensure the successful launch of energy-efficiency solutions.
• Attend site visits and project meetings and present analyses to the stakeholders.
• Prepare and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including specifications, design guidelines, energy models, test reports, and user manuals.
• Manage the development, design, or construction of energy conservation projects to ensure acceptability of budgets and timelines and conformance to federal and state laws.
• Provide consultation to clients or other engineers on topics such as climate control systems, energy modeling, data logging, sustainable design, and energy auditing.
• Stay updated with the latest industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements in the renewable energy and energy efficiency fields.
• Proactively identify opportunities for innovation and process enhancements, cost-effectiveness, and improved energy performance.
• Train personnel or clients on topics such as energy management and proper operational procedures.
• Review or negotiate energy purchase agreements and purchase materials, equipment, or other resources.
• Other tasks deemed necessary/appropriate by the supervisor
Qualifications and Skills: -
• Ideally master’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Energy, Sustainability preferred). Other Engineering disciplines may be considered.
• Certified as OSHA-30 prior to or within 6 months of employment, required
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), required.
• Certifications: Certified Energy Manager (CEM); Certified Building Commissioning Professional
(CBCP); Existing Building Commissioning Professional (EBCP); Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP); Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), LEED-AP.
• 7-10 years of progressive experience in engineering design, analyzing building energy
efficiency technologies and controls and specifying upgrades to improve the energy performance of building systems.
• Strong knowledge of applicable IESNA/ASHRAE design codes, design standards, and specification requirements, with the ability to interpret and apply them to specific project scope.
• Strong knowledge of relevant energy efficiency standards/regulations, e.g., LEED, ASHRAE,
NYCECC, ICC.
• Proficiency in building codes and accurately showcasing proficiency with required special and progress inspections and energy code analysis.
• Experience in the energy field, such as distributed energy generation/combined heat and power, project economics/rate analysis, project design, renewable energy, and HVAC.
• Experience with the design and construction of energy efficiency or clean energy projects in diverse buildings that vary in age, size, and use.
• Strong supervisory experience with the proven ability to lead and manage technical personnel.
• Proficiency in relevant software/tools, including AutoCAD, eQUEST, EQUIP, TREAT, and Microsoft applications.
• Accurately demonstrate experience with various load calculation and sizing techniques.
• Exceptional analytical, technical, and quantitative skills, with a demonstrated capability for strategic thinking.
• Excellent communication and technical writing skills to convey complex technical concepts effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• High level of productivity: able to meet and exceed project deadlines while managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
• Ability to travel within the tri-state area.
• Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
$120,000 - $140,000 per year
