About the NYS Center for Strengthening Community Violence Intervention Programs

Established by KAVI with funding support from the US Department of Justice and the Office of U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, the NYS Center for Strengthening Community Violence Intervention Programs (NYS CSCVIP) is a new statewide initiative to support the infrastructure and systems of small community violence intervention (CVI) and hospital-based violence intervention (HVI) programs. Small CVI and HVI programs are critical sources for effective violence intervention services. Yet, many have historically been underfunded and needed more resources to meet community needs or address emerging issues. The Center will bring together HVI and CVI programs to provide technical assistance, build capacity, particularly in fiscal and evaluation areas, offer training that improves quality of care, and connect them to other organizations and programs doing similar and supplementary work.

The Center operates in three ways:

  • Convene CVI and HVI programs to promote partnerships, highlight best practices, elevate and disseminate outcomes, and identify needs for successfully implementing violence intervention tools
  • Provide technical support to violence intervention programs in areas of fiscal operations, management, evaluation and impact, organization capacity, and sustainability
  • Improve the quality of care provided by training providers in the areas that include trauma-informed care, restorative justice, healing circles, and anti-racist care
