About the UCS Firearm Youth Intervention Program

This program is a dedicated intervention pipeline specifically designed for court-involved youth referred by the Unified Court System (UCS) Youth Part judges, Resource Coordinators, and probation officers. Grounded in a trauma-informed, public health framework, the program provides comprehensive alternatives to gun violence by delivering intensive mentoring, therapeutic services, case management, and resource navigation to high-risk young people in Brooklyn.


Job Description:

KAVI is seeking part-time Credible-Messenger Mentors—community members whose personal histories, resilience, and lived experience mirror the challenges faced by our court-involved participants. Mentors build deep, authentic relationships of trust, guiding youth away from violence and toward positive community engagement, personal stability, and healing.

  • Build deep, trust-based relationships with assigned youth
  • Accompany the youth to their court hearings in the Youth Part
  • Model healthy decision-making, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Collaborate closely with the program's Case Managers and LCSWs
  • Conduct regular, supportive outreach to participants’ parents or guardians
  • Attend bi-weekly multidisciplinary team case conferences to provide feedback on participant engagement, progress, and emerging barriers.


Qualifications & Competencies 

  • Personal lived experience of justice involvement, direct exposure to community gun violence, or related systemic trauma
  • Ability to strictly maintain participant confidentiality, respect ethical program guidelines, and navigate professional boundaries with court-involved youth.
  • Experience working with youth and preferably in a court setting
  • Able to engage and work with individuals and organizations of diverse backgrounds
  • Empathetic communication skills and behaviors
  • Solution-oriented, able to think creatively to address challenges and obstacles  
  • Flexibility and willingness to adjust and respond to changing situations.  
  • Connections to education, workforce development and youth development organizations and opportunities is a plus
  • KAVI Background clearance is required for this position
