MICROBIOLOGIST

ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $60,000–$70,000


Job Description

The Microbiologist, employed by Kairos Labs LLC as the Employer of Record, will work full-time, on-site at our Warren, Michigan location, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend or extended hours as needed to meet operational demands. This role is a key member of the Laboratory Operations team and is responsible for the preparation, processing, and analysis of cannabis samples for microbial contamination and other microbiological indicators.

As part of our scientific staff, the Microbiologist will follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs), adhere to strict compliance with state testing regulations, and maintain the integrity of lab data and reporting. This role requires attention to detail, time management, and a commitment to accuracy and safety in a fast-paced lab environment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process cannabis samples for microbiological testing using aseptic techniques and standard protocols.
  • Perform testing for total yeast and mold, total aerobic bacteria, and other regulated microorganisms using plating, qPCR, and/or ELISA methodologies.
  • Maintain and calibrate lab equipment, including incubators, pipettes, autoclaves, and biosafety cabinets.
  • Document all sample intake, prep, and results clearly and accurately in accordance with laboratory SOPs and Michigan cannabis regulations.
  • Maintain cleanroom and sterile work environments in compliance with ISO standards and lab protocols.
  • Review and validate test results before submitting to the Laboratory Director or QA/QC team for sign-off.
  • Support investigations into nonconforming results and participate in root cause analysis and CAPA processes when needed.
  • Collaborate with the Lab Director and other team members to improve workflow efficiency and testing accuracy.
  • Assist with training new laboratory technicians and cross-functional team members as assigned.
  • Participate in internal and external audits, method validations, and proficiency testing programs as required.
  • Perform additional duties as requested by the Laboratory Director or executive leadership.

Qualifications

Skills & Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, or a related life science field (required).
  • 1–2 years of laboratory experience in microbiology, ideally in a GMP, ISO 17025, cannabis, or food safety environment.
  • Strong knowledge of aseptic technique, microbial testing workflows, and lab safety protocols.
  • Comfortable working with live cultures, biosafety procedures, and contamination control.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple samples under time constraints.
  • Experience with LIMS systems and basic lab software (Microsoft Office, Google Suite, etc.).

Requirements


  • Must be 21+ years old.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be able to commute to and work on-site at Kairos Labs in Warren, MI.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain any required state certifications for cannabis laboratory personnel.
