Description

About the Role

Ivy City is hiring a Director of Finance & Accounting to own our accounting function end to end. This is an accounting-first, hands-on role. You will close the books yourself, build the processes behind them, and be accountable for numbers that are 100% accurate. Trust in our numbers is non-negotiable.

You will also own treasury: cash flow, working capital, and our banking and lender relationships. On the forecasting side, you are the bridge between the books and the model. You understand financial modeling well enough to work alongside the President and our data analyst, so forecasts and decisions rest on accurate actuals and sound accounting logic.

This person reports to the President, partners directly with our private equity partner on financial reporting, and builds the systems and processes that support our expansion into wholesale and marketplace channels. We also want someone who sees AI as a tool that can change how accounting work gets done, and who is excited to start building processes with it.

Accounting

  • Own the accuracy and integrity of the monthly close and financial reporting, in accordance with GAAP, including finalizing the monthly reporting package and tying it to our marketing reporting before it goes to the President
  • Do the hands-on accounting work yourself, including reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, AP/AR, and month-end close tasks, and review and approve the accounting team's work
  • Lead the monthly inventory reconciliation, year-end valuation, and year-end physical inventory count (with the Director of Operations), using warehouse management system reporting and Excel
  • Build, document, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, close checklists, and internal controls so the work is repeatable and can be handed off
  • Manage the company's outside sales tax and income tax contractors and check their work for accuracy
  • Design and implement accounting processes for wholesale and Amazon marketplace expansion, and lead month-end close improvements to support growth
  • Use AI tools and automation to rebuild how accounting work gets done, such as reconciliations, transaction coding, close tasks, and variance commentary, with review steps that protect accuracy

Finance

  • Own cash flow forecasting and working capital planning, including the cash impact of inventory purchases, and manage day-to-day banking and lender relationships
  • Partner with the President and data analyst on budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning: supply accurate actuals, make sure the model reflects how the business is accounted for, and flag when assumptions don't tie to the books
  • Prepare monthly budget-to-actual variance analysis, explain what is driving the numbers, and set up profitability reporting by channel (DTC, wholesale, Amazon, and retail)
  • Partner with our private equity partner on financial reporting, planning, and other financial needs

Team leadership & cross-functional collaboration

  • Design and build the accounting team around the work, assigning tasks to the right resource (employee, contractor, automation, or AI) to get accurate, cost-effective results
  • Directly manage, train, and develop the team, including teaching correct accounting principles, close procedures, and how to interpret and troubleshoot the numbers, and build collaboration with marketing, operations, product development, and customer service

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, growing into a Controller or Director-level accounting and finance roles, ideally in eCommerce/DTC with omnichannel (wholesale, marketplace) exposure
  • Has personally owned month-end close and still does the hands-on work: bookkeeping, reconciliations, and journal entries. This is a working leadership role, not an oversight-only position
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing accounting and financial processes that produce accurate numbers
  • Experience with inventory accounting, including valuation and adjustments
  • Comfortable with financial modeling and variance analysis: can read, question, and contribute to a forecast model, translate between the books and the model, and explain what is driving the numbers
  • Experience managing cash flow, working capital, and banking, lender, or private equity reporting relationships
  • Working knowledge of sales and income tax compliance
  • Experience building and managing a lean accounting team, including deciding what to staff, outsource, or automate, and developing direct reports
  • Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting and inventory systems (such as QuickBooks, Shopify, and warehouse management systems)
  • Excited about AI as a tool that changes how accountants work; has used AI or automation to improve an accounting process, or can show how they would
