iUrban Teen iGame Instructor (2 positions) Vancouver, WA · Portland, OR · Part time

The iGame Instructor will provide 20-24 hours of iGame to MS & HS students. iGame is an introduction to designing digital games, animation and stories using Scratch and other open source software, along with basic coding skills using Python. Students will create basic video games and animations, including music, and get an introduction to Python. Two iGame Instructor positions available: 1 for in-person classes in Vancouver, WA and 1 for in person classes in Portland, OR, after school between 2:30 – 6:00 pm, two days per week for 8 weeks (Mondays – Thursdays).

Description

Major Responsibilities & Duties May Include:


  • Teach an introduction to digital game design and some basic coding concepts
  • Prepare for the program by reviewing materials
  • Demonstrate and explain process steps clearly and with patience to 12-18 year olds in a mixed group setting
  • Teach students to design & modify digital games, stories and animations
  • Introduce students to the beginning steps of Python
  • Teach students to add music and sounds to games & other programs


Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:


  • Strong communication and management skills 
  • Ability to work independently, with a team, with HS Interns, and with diverse groups of students & adults
  • Ability to teach students to use Scratch to design digital games and programs
  • Able to exercise professional judgment to resolve moderately complex problems
  • Ability to pivot or adjust lesson plans to meet the needs of students in the program who come with a range of technology understanding and skills
  • Respond professionally and appropriately in varied situations
  • Clear presentation and communication skills to students of various ages and abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and organization skills


Ideal candidate profile:


  • Experienced working with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent knowledge of key computer science software, programming, and website and digital game and music development 
  • Able to pivot mid-assignment per the need of students
  • Able to catch up students who may be behind in pacing, while still serving students who are on pace in the program

iUrban Teen is a nationally recognized program dedicated to bringing career-focused STEM education to historically and systemically excluded teens ages 12 to 18. Youth receive hands-on exposure to a variety of careers and civic engagement opportunities that step them outside of their current boundaries. Our program goals are to increase awareness and knowledge of STEM+A careers and training, to build confidence and critical thinking, to provide mentorship and internship opportunities, and to create a collaborative learning model for youth.



Salary

$35 - $35 per hour
