We are seeking a dependable, skilled, and proactive Facilities Maintenance Technician to maintain the buildings, grounds, equipment, and school vans at our boarding school in Olympic Valley. This hands-on position requires general maintenance experience, sound judgment, strong organizational skills, and the ability to respond promptly to changing campus needs.

Because of our mountain location, snow removal is a significant seasonal responsibility. The school provides the equipment necessary for snow removal and grounds maintenance. The ideal candidate is comfortable working outdoors in varied weather conditions and can safely perform routine repairs and maintenance independently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Building Maintenance

• Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance throughout campus buildings.
• Complete general repairs involving doors, locks, windows, walls, flooring, fixtures, and furnishings.
• Perform minor plumbing repairs, including addressing leaks, replacing faucets, clearing basic clogs, and repairing toilets.
• Perform light electrical work within the employee’s experience and legal scope, such as replacing switches, outlets, light fixtures, and bulbs.
• Identify repairs requiring a licensed contractor and promptly notify school leadership.
• Prepare surfaces and complete interior and exterior painting, patching, and touch-up work.
• Perform basic carpentry and assemble, install, move, or repair furniture and shelving.
• Assist with maintaining heating systems, appliances, and other campus equipment, coordinating with outside vendors when necessary.
• Respond promptly to urgent maintenance concerns affecting student or employee safety.

Snow and Ice Removal

• Safely operate school-provided snow-removal equipment.
• Clear snow from parking areas, driveways, walkways, stairs, entrances, emergency exits, and other designated areas.
• Apply ice-melting or traction materials as needed.
• Monitor weather conditions and prepare equipment and supplies before anticipated storms.
• Be available for early-morning, evening, weekend, or holiday snow removal when weather conditions require it.
• Keep fire lanes, emergency access areas, and building exits clear and accessible.

Grounds and Outdoor Maintenance

• Perform seasonal yard work, including mowing, trimming, raking, weeding, planting, watering, and removing debris.
• Maintain outdoor walkways, fencing, signs, lighting, drainage areas, and recreational spaces.
• Remove fallen branches and address minor storm-related debris.
• Assist with seasonal campus preparation, including winterization and spring cleanup.
• Keep outdoor equipment, storage areas, maintenance spaces, and work vehicles clean and organized.

School Van Oversight

• Oversee the routine care and maintenance of school-owned vans and other designated vehicles.
• Develop and maintain a preventive maintenance schedule for oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, brake inspections, battery service, and other manufacturer-recommended services.
• Conduct or coordinate regular vehicle safety inspections, including checks of tires, lights, mirrors, windshield wipers, seat belts, and emergency equipment.
• Schedule service and repairs with qualified mechanics or dealerships.
• Transport vehicles to and from service appointments when required.
• Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance, repairs, registration, insurance documentation, and service expenses.
• Monitor vehicle mileage and notify school leadership of upcoming service requirements.
• Ensure that vehicles are clean, fueled, and ready for safe operation.
• Prepare vehicles for winter driving by coordinating tire changes, checking chains and other winter equipment, and ensuring appropriate emergency supplies are available.
• Promptly remove unsafe vehicles from service and notify school leadership of safety concerns.
• Assist with evaluating repair estimates and recommending when significant repairs or vehicle replacement should be considered.
• Perform only minor vehicle-maintenance tasks within the employee’s training and experience; mechanical repairs requiring specialized expertise will be completed by qualified service providers.

Safety and Campus Support

• Conduct all work in a manner that prioritizes student, employee, and visitor safety.
• Identify and report hazards, structural concerns, water damage, equipment failures, or other facility risks.
• Follow applicable safety requirements when working with tools, ladders, chemicals, electrical components, vehicles, and powered equipment.
• Maintain an appropriate inventory of tools, parts, maintenance supplies, and snow-removal materials.
• Document completed work and communicate maintenance priorities to school leadership.
• Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors when requested.
• Assist with campus setup for student arrivals, events, meetings, and other school activities.
• Interact professionally and appropriately with students, families, employees, and visitors.
• Perform other facilities-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• Previous experience in facilities maintenance, property maintenance, construction, groundskeeping, or a related field.
• Practical knowledge of general building repairs, painting, basic carpentry, minor plumbing, and light electrical work.
• Experience safely operating power tools and outdoor maintenance equipment.
• Ability to organize and track preventive maintenance schedules for facilities, equipment, and vehicles.
• Ability and willingness to perform snow removal during early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays when required.
• Ability to work independently, identify priorities, and complete assignments in a timely manner.
• Strong dependability, communication skills, recordkeeping skills, and attention to detail.
• Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to pass all background checks and clearances required for individuals working on a school campus.
• Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality in a residential school environment.

Preferred

• Experience maintaining a school, residential program, hotel, apartment complex, or similar multi-building property.
• Experience operating snow-removal equipment.
• Experience overseeing or coordinating the maintenance of multiple vehicles.
• Familiarity with mountain weather conditions and winter property maintenance.
• Basic knowledge of preventive maintenance and facility safety practices.
• Relevant trade training, certifications, or licenses.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

• Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs, and work from ladders.
• Lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and request assistance for heavier or awkward items.
• Operate hand tools, power tools, snow-removal equipment, grounds-maintenance equipment, and school vehicles.
• Work indoors and outdoors in cold, snow, ice, rain, heat, dust, and other changing conditions.
• Safely navigate uneven, wet, snowy, or icy surfaces.
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required.

Schedule and Availability

This is a full-time, year-round salaried position. The regular work schedule will be established based on campus needs. Flexibility is required because weather, facility emergencies, vehicle needs, and school activities may occasionally require work outside the regular schedule.

Snowstorms may require early-morning, evening, weekend, or holiday work to ensure that the campus is safe and accessible.

Compensation and Benefits

• Annual Salary: $70,304
