Who We Are

Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC, is a national nonprofit committed to making healthcare better for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). IEC works to change, at scale, how healthcare is taught, delivered, and paid for, to improve the wellbeing of people with IDD (conditions such as autism or Down syndrome). As nationally recognized healthcare leaders who also have personal connections to IDD, we foster collaborations between the disability and healthcare communities to create solutions that are effective, efficient, and centered on the priorities and perspectives of people with disabilities.

We are an ambitious and dynamic organization with partners spanning state and federal government agencies, academic medical centers, major health insurance companies, disability advocacy and service groups, national clinical organizations, and hundreds of people with IDD and their caregivers. We are seeking a versatile Communications Manager with a broad skill set to further grow our national presence and elevate our work to improve healthcare. This is a fully remote position.


This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to address health disparities among people with IDD by:

●     Providing strategic communications counsel, support, and leadership to team and partners

●     Building and implementing communications and marketing campaigns and strategies

●     Executing and adjusting a comprehensive communications plan drafted by an outside consulting agency

●     Serving as the organization’s brand steward, ensuring the use of consistent messaging and visual identity standards in all collateral

●     Creating content by drafting, vetting, and editing materials such as newsletters/email campaigns, website content, presentations, webinars, social media posts, grant applications, talking points, op-eds, press releases, and more

●     Partnering with staff, advisors, and self-advocates to tell the stories coming out of IEC’s projects through written content and media relations efforts

●     Creating compelling graphics and other visuals to bring content to life in external materials such as presentations, fact sheets, and digital channels

●     Supporting communications components of development team activities, including events, donor-specific materials, and end-of-year fundraising efforts

●     Managing external vendors to build online learning community websites and design annual report

●     Monitoring and reporting on activity and metrics, using data to provide constructive guidance to better engage audiences

●     Working on rapid response efforts and special projects as needed

The Communications Manager will report to the COO and will work closely with the Director of Development and the rest of the IEC team.


The successful candidate should have:

●       A passion for our mission

●       A bachelor’s degree

●       5+ years of relevant communications/marketing experience

●       Experience working in the healthcare sector (highly preferred)

●       Excellent verbal and written communication skills

●       Understanding of accessibility best practices, including plain language writing and WCAG standards

●       Experience building and executing strategic communications campaigns and plans

●       Strong time management and interpersonal skills

●       Exceptional attention to detail

●       Ability to work with executive leadership with maturity, confidence, and sound judgment

●       Comfort with ambiguity and change; desire to join a small team in a fast-paced, start-up-like environment

●       Demonstrated ability to manage multiple workstreams under daily or weekly deadline pressure

●       Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite – including Word and PowerPoint

●       Skills in editing and proofreading

●       Basic graphic design skills using Canva; comfort with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus

●       Experience using Wordpress CMS; Elementor experience is a plus

Compensation and Benefits

$75,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience, along with a typical benefits package.

IEC is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC, but operating virtually with team members in multiple states. All staff should be prepared for work hours that begin no later than 10am Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. We do not cover relocation expenses. We occasionally have in-person staff meetings in Washington, DC, and compensate for travel and lodging costs. We also provide a monthly technology stipend for equipment/internet/phone usage.
