Generator Service Technician

Hutton Electric, Heating & Air | Hampton Roads, Virginia

Help keep Hampton Roads powered.

Hutton Electric, Heating & Air is looking for a dependable Generator Service Technician who takes pride in solving problems, doing quality work, and taking care of customers.

We are a local, family-owned company serving homeowners throughout Hampton Roads. Our approach is simple: send the right technician, thoroughly evaluate the problem, educate the customer, and provide clear options.

In this role, you will maintain, diagnose, and repair residential standby generators and automatic transfer switches, including Generac, Kohler, and Briggs & Stratton equipment. You will help homeowners keep their backup power systems ready when they need them most.

What You’ll Do

Preventive Maintenance

  • Perform scheduled maintenance according to manufacturer requirements and equipment condition.
  • Change engine oil, oil filters, air filters, and spark plugs as required.
  • Inspect batteries, terminals, cables, charging systems, and starting systems.
  • Inspect accessible fuel connections, hoses, wiring, exhaust components, and enclosures for wear, damage, leaks, or corrosion.
  • Check controller settings, exercise schedules, operating hours, and fault history.
  • Perform operational checks and document equipment condition, maintenance completed, and recommended repairs.

Troubleshooting and Repairs

  • Diagnose no-start, hard-start, shutdown, charging, and performance problems.
  • Troubleshoot engine, ignition, starting, control, and electrical faults.
  • Evaluate natural gas and propane fuel-delivery concerns within your training and authorized scope.
  • Diagnose voltage, frequency, sensing, and transfer-related problems using appropriate instruments and manufacturer procedures.
  • Read wiring diagrams, service manuals, fault codes, and technical bulletins.
  • Identify the root cause of failures and verify repairs through appropriate testing.
  • Work with manufacturer technical support when additional diagnostic assistance is needed.

Automatic Transfer Switch Service

  • Inspect and troubleshoot automatic transfer switches and associated controls.
  • Diagnose utility-sensing, generator-start, and transfer-operation concerns.
  • Inspect connections, conductors, contactors, and control components using appropriate de-energization and safety procedures.
  • Coordinate planned power interruptions with customers before testing or repairs.
  • Verify proper transfer and retransfer operation after service when conditions permit.

Customer Service

  • Explain findings in clear language homeowners can understand.
  • Present appropriate repair and maintenance options with accurate pricing.
  • Obtain customer authorization before performing additional work.
  • Help customers understand generator operation, maintenance needs, and warning signs.
  • Recommend maintenance memberships when appropriate.
  • Protect the customer’s property and leave the work area clean.
  • Identify replacement needs or installation opportunities and communicate them to the appropriate team member.

Documentation and Teamwork

  • Complete service records in ServiceTitan, including diagnostic findings, measurements, photos, parts used, and work performed.
  • Record equipment model numbers, serial numbers, operating hours, and relevant fault information.
  • Provide complete documentation for warranty-related work.
  • Maintain organized tools, service materials, and vehicle inventory.
  • Communicate scheduling changes, parts needs, and follow-up requirements to the office.
  • Participate in technical training, safety meetings, and manufacturer education.
  • Support installation and commissioning work as assigned and within your qualifications.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in generator service, electrical troubleshooting, engine repair, or a closely related technical field.
  • A working understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, with the ability to troubleshoot methodically.
  • Ability to use electrical meters, hand tools, and diagnostic equipment safely.
  • Ability to read technical instructions and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to completing work correctly.
  • Professional communication skills and a customer-focused attitude.
  • A valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable for operating a company vehicle.
  • Ability to use a smartphone or tablet to complete service documentation.
  • Dependable attendance and the ability to manage assigned work with limited supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience servicing Generac, Kohler, or Briggs & Stratton standby generators.
  • Manufacturer service training or certifications.
  • Experience with automatic transfer switches and generator commissioning.
  • Experience troubleshooting natural gas and propane engines.
  • Residential electrical service experience.
  • Experience with warranty diagnostics and manufacturer technical support.
  • Familiarity with ServiceTitan.

Relevant electrical, automotive, diesel, or small-engine experience is welcome. Tell us how your background prepares you for generator service.

Safety and Work Standards

You will be expected to:

  • Follow company safety practices, manufacturer instructions, and applicable requirements.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Verify equipment conditions before beginning work.
  • Work only within your training, qualifications, and authorized scope.
  • Report unsafe conditions, equipment damage, and incidents promptly.
  • Drive responsibly and maintain a clean, professional service vehicle.
  • Treat customers, coworkers, and their property with respect.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position involves travel to customer properties and hands-on work around outdoor standby generators.

Essential duties may include:

  • Working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching during inspections and repairs.
  • Working around engine noise, hot components, electrical equipment, and fuel systems.
  • Handling tools, batteries, maintenance supplies, and replacement components using appropriate lifting methods and assistance.
  • Accessing equipment in yards and other residential service areas.

Essential job duties must be performed safely, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Schedule

Work is scheduled around customer service needs, preventive maintenance, and repair appointments. Participation in an on-call rotation and occasional evening, weekend, or storm-response work may be required. Schedule expectations will be discussed during the hiring process.

Compensation

Compensation will be discussed during the hiring process based on relevant experience, technical ability, and manufacturer qualifications. Pay structure and available benefits will be reviewed with candidates.

A successful technician:
