GROUNDSKEEPER 

This is a part-time non-exempt position, not to exceed 1040 hours annually. This position  performs variety of manual labor and maintenance activities related to the grounds of the  Humboldt County fairground’s property and buildings throughout the year.  

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED 

Receives direction from the Chief Executive Officer. No direct reports.

The Groundskeeper is responsible for performing a variety of landscape and related maintenance duties  throughout Humboldt County Fairgrounds including the property, parking lots, and adjacent streets;  operating and maintaining a variety of equipment and tools; and perform other related responsibilities. 

KEY SKILLS & COMPETENCIES.  

Groundskeeping/Landscaping  

⮚ Performs and oversees duties that include mowing, edging, pruning, and applying fertilizer as needed to plants, trees, shrubs, ground cover, and lawn areas. 

⮚ Waters and/or irrigates plants and foliage. 

⮚ Conditions soils and treats plants, etc. with appropriate herbicides. 

⮚ Removes trash and debris prior to mowing designated areas. 

⮚ Orders supplies and equipment as needed. 

⮚ Ability to operate various power equipment including, but not limited to mowers, trimmers, hedgers, blowers, and other landscaping equipment. 

⮚ Utilizes the appropriate equipment in order to maintain and enhance plant materials on grounds to ensure landscaping work is routinely completed in a timely manner. ⮚ Assists in the improvement of decorative planting of borders, walkways, ponds, fountains and Tote Board.

QUALIFICATIONS 

⮚ Exerts physical effort in doing assigned duties. 

⮚ Follows oral and written instructions. 

⮚ Excellent customer service and ability to work cooperatively with team members and others. 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

⮚ Work is performed outdoors. 

⮚ Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risk that require following basic safety precautions. 

⮚ Requires use of power and noise-producing tools and equipment, and driving motorized equipment or vehicles applicable to job being performed. 

⮚ Wear safety equipment during work performance (e.g. ear plugs, dust masks, eye and face protection, gloves, rain gear and back support) 

⮚ Expose to dust, dirt, fumes, chemicals, and unpleasant odors. 

⮚ Work involves exposure to uneven ground surfaces. 

⮚ Stands, walks, and/or moves for sustained periods. 

⮚ Moves objects up to 50 pounds.
