Research Engineering Intern – Database Systems (Summer 2027)
Hotdata is an early-stage, VC-backed startup building data infrastructure for AI agents.
Traditional databases were designed for applications and analytics. AI agents introduce fundamentally different workloads: thousands of concurrent agents creating, querying, and interacting with data dynamically, often at unpredictable scale.
We're building a new data layer designed for this shift, with a focus on high-performance query execution, efficient storage, and scalable database infrastructure.
Our technology is built on Rust, Apache DataFusion, Apache Arrow, Parquet, and cloud-native infrastructure. We're a small team of experienced engineers working on challenging problems at the intersection of database internals, distributed systems, and AI infrastructure.
Start: May/June 2027
We're looking for one engineering intern for Summer 2027, focused on database internals and query execution.
This role is particularly suited to students doing research or advanced coursework in databases, query processing, storage systems, compilers, or related systems areas.
You'll work directly with Hotdata's founders and engineering team on shaping the architecture.
Share your resume and any relevant research, publications, benchmarks, open-source contributions, or systems projects you've worked on.
We're particularly interested in students already working on database or systems research who want to apply that experience to a production system.
