Detailed Job Description

Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church in Carrollton welcomes and supports families with young children. Our mission is to create a safe, nurturing, welcoming and engaging environment for children while their parents or guardians are participating in church meetings, services, programs, or events.

Hours: Sundays from 9:30am - 12:30 pm. Other hours are optional and arranged in advance. We require commitment of at least two Sunday mornings per month. Sometimes hours continue past 12:30 pm on Sundays and employee would know in advance if shift were to run later. Occasional Saturday childcare is requested and paid at higher rate. Saturday work is optional, not required.

Childcare employees may bring own children to work if approved in advance.

Goal: Provide a safe, nurturing, welcoming, and engaging environment before and after the Sunday service for children up to age 11 whose parents or guardians participate in classes and activities, and for babies and toddlers during Sunday religious education classes (10:15-11:45 am.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Needed: Prior experience caring for children in a group setting, knowledge of child development, comfort with progressive religious values, and a clear background check in compliance with the church's Safe Congregations Policy. CPR and First Aid certification is recommended, but not required.

Duties:

1. Open and set up the childcare room (i.e., check for cleanliness, set out sign-in sheets, organize activity areas). Ensure the absence of any hazards.

2. Greet parents and children upon arrival, and particularly welcome first-time visitors, providing overview of childcare operation, and allowing parent to remain with the child until comfortable with the setting.

3. Ensure that parents sign children in and out of childcare each time they visit. Consult with parents regarding the child’s health history, allergies, and any other concerns regarding the child’s well-being while in the care of the nursery. Ensure that parents complete (after three visits) Religious Education registration forms.

4. Ensure children have appropriate and safe toys and activities.

a. Organize and participate in age-appropriate activities with the children, such as games, roleplaying, reading and storytelling, songs and fingerplays, or simple crafts.

b. Assist children in attaining age-appropriate skills, such as self-care, care of belongings, manners, cooperation, and engaging in community.

c. As appropriate, assist in preparing and serving simple snacks for children, and helping them clean up afterwards.

d. Support and encourage healthy growth and development (physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and social) of the individual children and the community as a whole.

5. Support and comply with our church’s policies and procedures.

6. With regard to safety and discipline, caregivers will:

a. Use positive language to direct or redirect children.

b. Refrain from physical discipline or punishment.

c. Maintain a space that is physically and emotionally safe for all children and caregivers.

d. Ensure that children in diapers or in process of potty-training remain clean and dry through the use of frequent diaper checks and bathroom breaks.

e. Communicate concerns to parents, and report something positive to the parent upon pick-up.

f. Report concerns, problems, accidents, or suggestions to the Director of Religious Education immediately.

7. Pick-up toys and clean childcare space prior to departure; report any concerns to the Director of Religious Education.

8. Caregivers are expected to work cooperatively with each other and share duties equitably.

9. Other duties as requested to support older children's classes.
