Payroll & Benefits Focus | Multi-Client | Remote

About the Role

We're not a traditional HR department. We are THE HR Department for small businesses across the United States. Our team helps clients navigate payroll, benefits, recruiting, compliance, and employee experience so they can focus on growing their businesses.

We're looking for a People Operations Specialist who loves payroll, enjoys helping people, and thrives in a fast-paced, technology-forward environment.

If you're the person who catches payroll and benefits administration errors before anyone else, enjoys solving complicated employee questions, and believes details matter, we'd love to meet you.

This is not a high-volume data entry role. This is a client-facing position requiring collaboration with our payroll, bookkeeping, HR, recruiting, and advisory teams.

What You’ll Do

You will ensure payroll is completed accurately before submission, onboarding documentation is complete before start dates, benefits are set up correctly, and compliance requirements are handled properly and on time.

  • Track eligibility and manage enrollments and qualifying life events.
  • Reconcile benefit invoices to payroll deductions.
  • Ensure timely 401(k) contribution remittance.
  • Coordinate open enrollment and dismissal processes.
  • Follow up persistently to collect required documentation.

Client Communication

  • Serve as a point of contact for payroll and benefits matters.
  • Communicate deadlines clearly and confidently.
  • Follow up professionally when information is missing.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure seamless service delivery.

Who You Are

  • Detail-obsessed in the best possible way.
  • Comfortable juggling multiple payroll calendars at once.
  • Calm under deadline pressure.
  • Not afraid to send a second (or third) follow-up email when needed.
  • Tech-savvy and comfortable working in cloud-based systems.
  • Professional, discreet, and trustworthy with sensitive data.
  • Energized by helping small businesses operate more smoothly.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • 3+ years of payroll processing experience.
  • Benefits administration experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience working with payroll software.
  • Strong Microsoft 365 skills.

Bonus Points For

  • Gusto experience.
