On April 19, 2019, Joe Kenney lost his son Gary, age 30, to suicide. Prior to Gary’s death, Joe did everything he could to help Gary who was battling severe depression. When he and his son needed help the most, Joe encountered a healthcare system that was not equipped to advise him or help him keep Gary safe. He couldn’t find any help; he didn’t know where to go or what to do – and he felt he knew everybody. On the day of Gary’s funeral Joe made a decision. He decided to, again, create something that did not exist before, an entity designed to be there for people who are feeling hopeless and families that have no place to turn to for help. Spurred to action by this greatest of loss, Joe set out to solve the most vexing problem of all, preventing suicide. When Here Tomorrow opened its doors in 2021, Joe thought, if Here Tomorrow can ensure that one son, one father, one brother, or one sister is here with us tomorrow, it would all be worth it. The Here Tomorrow Team is now connecting daily with people who are seriously contemplating suicide and offering real help when the stakes are highest.

Position Summary:

The Inpatient Peer Support Specialist provides peer support and linkage to Here Tomorrow services for adults receiving care in an inpatient behavioral health unit. This role supports individuals in crisis, promotes recovery, and collaborates with the hospital team to identify and engage those at risk. A key goal of the role is to reduce psychiatric readmission rates by ensuring effective follow-up care and connection to ongoing peer support.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide peer support to adults during inpatient hospitalization.
• Identify and engage eligible individuals for enrollment in Here Tomorrow services.
• Support individuals in developing personalized recovery and transition plans.
• Promote recovery and connection through the peer model.
• Collaborate with hospital staff, attend daily huddles, treatment team meetings, and clinical rounds.
• Facilitate warm handoffs to Here Tomorrow to reduce risk of readmission.
• Document services in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and maintain activity logs.
• Assist with support groups and respond to patient needs as appropriate.
• Uphold confidentiality and model Here Tomorrow’s values of love, sharing, accountability, and perseverance.

Performance Measures:

• Increased enrollment and engagement of at-risk individuals.
• Reduced psychiatric readmissions through proactive peer support and linkage.
• Strengthened peer integration within hospital workflows.
• Enhanced community support and awareness of Here Tomorrow’s mission.

Qualifications:

• Certified Recovery Peer Specialist (CRPS) or be certified within 12 months.
• Minimum 2 years in recovery from mental health and/or substance use condition.
• Comfortable working in an inpatient hospital setting.
• Bilingual (Spanish) a plus.
