Position Overview

Helping Education is hiring an Adult and Family Literacy (AFL) Facilitator and Trainer. We are looking for an experienced, community-, and justice-focused educator to facilitate classes and trainings in our Motheread/Fatheread (MR/FR) adult and family literacy program (see Program Overview section). Specifically, the AFL Facilitator and Trainer will be on-site in Anson Correctional Facility and other area prisons (women’s and/or men’s facilities) multiple days a week to facilitate MR/FR classes with adult students. They will also co-facilitate MR/FR training workshops at least a few times per year (in person and virtually) for a wide range of individuals around the United States who want to provide MR/FR classes in their communities. These workshop attendees include, for example, school-based educators, staff of community-based organizations, and Department of Corrections staff. While the primary and initial focus of this position will be to provide classes and trainings in the Motheread/Fatheread program, the person in this position will also have the opportunity to learn and offer programming in our other Adult, Family, and Community Empowerment (AFACE) programs, such as Story Exploring, BABY, and Parents and Schools Together to Enhance Learning (PASTEL).


In addition to facilitating classes or providing trainings in the Raleigh area, occasional travel (with reimbursement) may be required in other parts of North Carolina. Providing virtual trainings at times may also be required. Sometimes work can be facilitated from home. When in-person work is not necessary (such as teaching in-person classes), the person in this position will have the flexibility to work from home.

Motheread/Fatheread Program (MR/FR)

The nationally-acclaimed Motheread/Fatheread (MR/FR) program includes 29 thoroughly developed and research-supported lessons that: 

  • Enhance the literacy skills of parents and caregivers in four key areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. 
  • Help parents and caregivers understand the importance of reading regularly to children.
  • Utilize award-winning, multicultural children’s books. 
  • Teach parents and caregivers how to share stories and themes with children in engaging ways that will help to enhance their children’s vocabulary development and reading comprehension.  
  • Empower parents and caregivers to create a comfortable and enjoyable home environment for reading.

Detailed Job Description

The primary areas of responsibility and duties of the AFL Facilitator and Trainer include:


Motheread/Fatheread (MR/FR) Classes in NC Dept. of Adult Corrections (~85%)

  • Providing MR/FR classes to adult students in Raleigh.  
  • Planning engaging and interactive lesson plans.  
  • Working with prison staff to recruit students for MR/FR classes. 
  • Acquiring the necessary books, supplies, and materials for MR/FR classes (expenses covered by Helping Education). 
  • Assisting with aspects of program evaluation to ensure classes are high-quality and meet students’ needs.


Motheread/Fatheread (MR/FR) Trainings (~15%) 

  • Co-facilitating engaging and informative Motheread/Fatheread trainings for individuals who seek to offer MR/FR classes within their own communities.
  • Facilitating clear and timely communication and coordination with training participants and/or organizations sponsoring trainings (for example, assisting with registration, logistics, space, materials, obtaining other resources, etc.).
  • Working with a Business Operations staff member to ensure training materials are ordered and shipped in a timely fashion to the appropriate place and person.
  • Updating templated communications materials for trainings (e.g. flyers). 
  • Collecting data and feedback from training participants. 
  • When applicable, complete and submit paperwork to provide continuing education units (CEUs) to training participants. 
  • Working with staff to refine and improve trainings, as needed. 
  • Other tasks as needed to ensure high-quality training.


Desired Skills, Experience, and Characteristics

The ideal candidate will possess experience and training to execute the responsibilities summarized in the job description and demonstrate the following skills and characteristics:

  • Is a transparent, equitable, inclusive, and service-oriented educator. 
  • Has at least 2-5 years of training and/or teaching experience (K-12 and/or adult education) or equivalent professional experience. 
  • Has a demonstrated commitment to advancing educational equity and other forms of social justice.
  • Has a proven track record of thoughtfully and successfully teaching students from historically underserved and marginalized populations and communities. 
  • Understands the complexity and nuances of teaching in prison or is willing to learn with humility and an open mind. 
  • Has a passion for training a diverse range of audiences in high-quality, evidence-based literacy programs.  
  • Is highly organized and has the capacity to work effectively on multiple activities. 
  • Has excellent verbal and written communication skills. 


Additional qualifications that are not required but are beneficial for this position include:  

  • Experience facilitating virtual trainings. 
  • Ability to speak, teach, and train in Spanish. 
  • Experience with literacy programming.

Pay and Benefits

Helping Education is a family-friendly organization dedicated to attracting and retaining talented, hard-working staff. As such, Helping Education offers full-time employees a robust package of benefits.


The part-time position will work up to 30 hours per week, with a minimum compensation rate starting at $25.00 per hour. The specific rate will commensurate with the person's level of relevant professional experience. Several benefits are also included with this part-time position, such as paid holidays and PTO.
