Sexual Assault Advocate

Reports To: Executive Director

FLSA Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

Funding: Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP) — Grant-funded position (August 2026–December 2026)


Position Summary

The Hannah’s Place Sexual Assault Advocate provides direct, trauma-informed advocacy, crisis intervention, and support services to adult, youth, and child survivors of non-intimate partner sexual assault, as well as secondary survivors (family members, friends, peers) impacted by sexual violence. The Advocate ensures that every survivor in Halifax, Northampton, Bertie, and Hertford Counties receives compassionate, confidential, and culturally responsive support. This position is part of Hannah’s Place’s mission to end sexual violence and empower survivors toward healing, safety, and self-determination.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Direct Services (70%)

  • Provide crisis intervention and emotional support to survivors through in-person, phone, and virtual contact.
  • Offer hospital, law enforcement, and court accompaniment for sexual assault survivors.
  • Provide individual advocacy and goal planning focused on survivor safety, healing, and empowerment.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate support groups for survivors and secondary survivors.
  • Assist survivors in accessing community resources, including medical, legal, housing, and mental health support.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to Hannah’s Place’s survivor-centered, trauma-informed approach.


Community Coordination (20%)

  • Build collaborative relationships with SANE programs, healthcare providers, law enforcement, schools, and other service partners.
  • Conduct survivor outreach and education to raise awareness of sexual assault services available through Hannah’s Place.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings as needed to improve coordinated community response.


Administrative and Reporting (10%)

  • Maintain accurate, confidential documentation of all client services.
  • Complete all required SASP reports and NCCASA monitoring documentation.
  • Participate in supervision, staff meetings, and professional development trainings.


Qualifications


Required:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in social work, human services, psychology, or related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to survivor-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive advocacy.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage crisis situations calmly and compassionately.
  • Willingness to complete required NCCASA/NCCADV core advocacy training within the first 60 days of hire.
  • Reliable transportation; ability to travel within the four-county service area as needed.


Preferred:

  • Experience providing advocacy to survivors of sexual assault or domestic violence.
  • Knowledge of community resources in northeastern North Carolina.
  • Familiarity with confidentiality laws, Title IX processes, and trauma recovery principles.


Work Schedule and Compensation

  • Schedule: Part-time, approximately 20 hours per week (some evening or on-call hours may be required for crisis response).
  • Compensation: $15–$18/hour (depending on experience) plus applicable fringe benefits (FICA and unemployment).
  • This is a grant-funded position through the Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP) with continuation contingent upon future funding.


Work Environment

  • Work is primarily performed in the Hannah’s Place office, shelter, and community settings (e.g., hospitals, courts, schools).
  • Must maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and composure in sensitive or crisis situations.
