Hands-on House is looking for enthusiastic and dependable volunteers to help bring learning to life through play! Volunteers support our mission by engaging with children and families in interactive exhibits, assisting with special events and educational programs, and helping to maintain a welcoming, safe, and playful environment. This is a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy working with kids, value creativity and curiosity, and want to make a meaningful impact in their community. No experience needed just a positive attitude and a willingness to help!

About Hands-on House Children's Museum of Lancaster

Since opening its doors in 1987, the Hands-On House Children’s Museum of Lancaster has been fostering the intellectual, social, and emotional development of young children for nearly 40 years. Through professionally curated exhibits and educational programs, Hands-On House strives to empower young children and families to connect, create, and learn through immersive, independent, and purposeful play. The museum offers educator-curated experiences, including exhibits, classes, camps, and outreach programs for young children and their families.

Description

We are currently looking for support in the following areas:


Garden Volunteers

Help keep our outdoor play area beautiful and welcoming! Tasks include weeding, cleaning toys and structures, assisting with projects such as mulching or stonework, and more. This role would be perfect for anyone who enjoys fresh air and hands-on work.


Exhibit Support Volunteers

Assist with behind-the-scenes projects that keep our exhibits fresh and engaging. Tasks may include paint touch-ups, toy upkeep or creation, sewing costumes, sanitizing exhibit materials, making exhibit pieces, and more. Volunteers with fix-it or maintenance skills are also welcome for projects such as repairing toys and exhibit pieces. This role is ideal for those who enjoy creative and practical projects.


PlayLab & Art Studio Hosts

Bring creativity and play to life by welcoming guests into our PlayLab or Art Studio. Volunteers will engage children and families in conversation, encourage art and/or play activities, support pop-up events and projects, and keep the space tidy during their shift. Great for people who enjoy interacting with kids and sparking imagination.


Museum Docents

Enhance the museum experience for guests through play, conversation, and engagement. Docents support field trips and group visits by engaging students and helping facilitate activities. Perfect for current or former educators – or anyone who enjoys guiding play.


Seasonal Volunteers

Join us for special events and projects throughout the year, such as garden refresh days, Touch-a-Truck days, pop-up events, and more. Perfect for those who want to stay connected and contribute occasionally.
