The Board of Directors of H.E.A.R.T.S. are volunteers that are representing the organization as the governing body of the nonprofit. The members of the H.E.A.R.T.S. Board of Directors focus on the high-level strategy, oversight, and accountability of the organization, helping it to grow in its mission. Board Members are asked to serve for a term of two years and the time commitment expected from Board Members is about 4 hours per month.

Description

Responsibilities of the Board of Directors

  • Determine the organization’s mission and purpose, and ensure the organization’s activities are supporting that purpose
  • Support the Executive Director and review performance
  • Ensure effective organizational planning
  • Ensure adequate resources by engaging in fundraising and networking for the organization
  • Determine and monitor the organization’s programs and services
  • Manage resources effectively
  • Enhance the organization’s public image
  • Serve as a court of appeal when necessary
  • Assess its own performance

 

Typical Responsibilities of an Individual Board Member

  • Attend all quarterly board meetings (1-2 hours long) and activities, including special events and board retreats
  • Serve on at least one committee, which meet monthly for one hour long.
  • Become knowledgeable about the organization and its impact, and serve as an ambassador for the organization's mission
  • Come to board meetings well-prepared and well-informed about issues on the agenda
  • Contribute to meetings by expressing your informed perspective
  • Consider other points of view, make constructive suggestions and help the the board makes decisions that benefit those the organization serves
  • Represent your organization to individuals, the public, and other organizations
  • Support the organization with a personal financial contribution
  • Assume board leadership roles when asked
  • Keep the administrator informed about any concerns of the community
