Description

Greater Washington Partnership (the Partnership) is a cross-sector alliance of leading employers in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia committed to championing the region’s economic growth and prosperity. Greater Washington Partnership is seeking a Senior Director of Marketing & Communications to lead the organization’s communications, marketing, media relations, and content efforts.

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Senior Director will work across the organization to translate GWP’s priorities and substantive work into clear, relevant, and compelling communications. This person will connect GWP’s research, initiatives, convenings, and employer leadership to the broader story of the region, including its economic strengths, challenges, opportunities, and future competitiveness. This is a hands-on role that requires strong judgment and execution. The Senior Director will be expected to anticipate opportunities, bring forward developed recommendations, build practical plans, and lead work through completion. The successful candidate will be an exceptional storyteller, an experienced media and marketing professional, and an effective manager of people, projects, and external partners.

Core Responsibilities

Communications Strategy and Storytelling

·      Execute an integrated communications and marketing strategy aligned with GWP’s organizational priorities.

·      Work with the Leadership Team and initiative teams to identify the communications opportunities with the greatest potential to advance GWP’s goals.

·      Connect GWP’s research, initiatives, employer engagement, and convenings to broader economic issues affecting the region.

·      Translate complex economic, policy, workforce, infrastructure, and programmatic topics into clear and accessible communications.

·      Maintain an integrated editorial and communications calendar across organizational priorities, events, publications, and executive engagements.

Media Relations and External Engagement

·      Develop communications strategies that expand the reach of GWP’s work among business leaders, policymakers, media, funders, civic partners, and other key audiences.

·      Create communications plans for major initiatives, research, publications, events, and organizational moments.

·      Lead proactive media relations across regional, national, business, policy, and relevant trade outlets.

·      Build and maintain productive relationships with reporters, editors, producers, and other media contacts, and proactively pitch timely stories, data, employer perspectives, and executive voices.

·      Establish practical measures of media reach, audience engagement, partner participation, and communications effectiveness.

Employer Partner Engagement

·      Build strong working relationships with the communications teams of GWP’s Board and Leadership Council partners.

·      Understand employer partners’ priorities, audiences, internal processes, and areas of interest.

·      Develop coordinated communications and amplification plans for selected priorities, publications, campaigns, and events.

·      Provide partner communications teams with clear, timely materials that make participation straightforward.

Integrated Marketing, Social Media, and Content

·      Oversee GWP’s website, email, social media, podcast, publications, events, executive channels, and other owned platforms.

·      Provide strategic direction and oversight to the manager responsible for day-to-day social content, publishing, and channel management.

·      Review and guide social content for major priorities, executive communications, and high-profile moments.

·      Develop integrated campaigns that connect social media with earned media, email, web, events, executive visibility, and partner amplification.

·      Guide the development of reports, presentations, newsletters, videos, digital assets, collateral, and event materials.

·      Maintain a pipeline of useful content, including data, outcomes, employer examples, partner perspectives, and stories from across the region.

·      Use audience insights and performance data to improve content, channel, and campaign decisions.

·      Maintain high standards for writing, editing, accuracy, design, accessibility, and presentation.

Leadership and Execution

·      Anticipate communications needs and opportunities rather than waiting for assignments or finished deliverables.

·      Help teams identify the most relevant story within their work and gather the evidence, examples, and perspectives needed to support it.

·      Manage, mentor, and support Marketing & Communications staff and interns.

·      Establish clear workflows for prioritization, project management, review, and approval.

·      Manage multiple projects and ensure work is completed on time and at a high standard.

Internal Communications

·      Develop internal communications that help staff understand organizational priorities, key decisions, progress, and upcoming work.

·      Work with the Chief of Staff and Executive Team to ensure important information is communicated clearly and consistently.

·      Help connect work across initiatives so staff understand how individual projects contribute to broader organizational goals.

·      Support staff updates, leadership messages, presentations, meeting materials, and other internal communications.

·      Ensure internal and external communications are aligned while recognizing differences in audience, detail, and timing.

What We Value

·      At least 12 years of progressive experience in communications, marketing, media relations, public affairs, corporate affairs, or a related field, including experience leading execution in a complex organization.

·      Exceptional writing, editing, messaging, and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex economic, policy, research, and programmatic issues into clear and compelling communications.

·      Demonstrated success developing proactive media strategies, identifying strong story opportunities, and securing substantive earned-media coverage.

·      Familiarity with regional economic growth, workforce, infrastructure, transportation, technology, energy, or related business and policy issues.

·      Knowledge of the Baltimore-to-Richmond region and its business, media, civic, and policy landscape.
