About the role

We are seeking a skilled Tax Attorney to join our tax controversy team. This role focuses on high-stakes, complex disputes with the IRS and state tax authorities, primarily examinations and appeals, with some tax collections matters. You will manage cases from initial strategy through resolution, including Tax Court litigation when necessary. The ideal candidate is an excellent legal writer and confident advocate who can persuasively present facts and law to examiners, Appeals, and the court. The role will have a 1600 hour annual billable requirement. 

What you will do

  • Lead federal and Illinois state tax controversy matters, including audits, administrative appeals, and select collections cases.
  • Develop case strategy, identify dispositive issues, and build clear factual narratives supported by documents and law.
  • Draft and revise high-quality written work product, including:
  • IDR responses and substantiation packages
  • Position letters and legal memos
  • Appeals protests and conference submissions
  • Tax Court petitions, motions, and briefs
  • Settlement communications and stipulations
  • Represent clients in oral advocacy, including conferences with IRS examiners, Appeals Officers, and hearings before the Tax Court as needed.
  • Manage deadlines, communications, and case workflow with a high level of organization and ownership.
  • Advise clients on risk, exposure, and options, translating technical issues into practical guidance and action steps.
  • Collaborate with internal accountants and other professionals to analyze records, reconcile facts, and strengthen evidentiary support.
  • Maintain current knowledge of tax procedure and developments relevant to controversy practice.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar license in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrated strength in legal research and writing, including the ability to draft persuasive, well-supported briefs and submissions.
  • Working knowledge of federal tax procedure and controversy lifecycle, including examinations and Appeals.
  • Strong oral communication skills with the ability to advocate effectively in high-pressure settings.
  • Excellent judgment, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple active matters with competing deadlines.

Preferred experience

  • Prior experience in tax controversy, litigation, or administrative law, including any of the following:
  • IRS examinations and Appeals conferences
  • Tax Court litigation or motion practice
  • State tax audits and appeals
  • Collections work (liens, levies, installment agreements, OICs), especially when intertwined with pending disputes
  • Familiarity with evidentiary development and organizing large substantiation records.
  • Experience working alongside accountants or financial professionals on complex factual issues.
