The Mentor Coordinator is responsible for serving as the primary liaison to the FATE HS Program’s volunteer mentors. This individual will also ensure effective mentor and mentee relationship development in accordance with programmatic expectations, while facilitating the appropriate initial and on-going trainings that mentors will need to be successful.

This position will perform essential functions under regular supervision. The workweek will include working hours of 9am to 5pm during the summer season, and during the school year the workweek will include four days per week with hours of 10:30am to 6:30pm for programmatic purposes.

Give Merit was Founded in 2011 and is the nonprofit arm of a cause-based fashion brand, Merit. The organization has worked intensively with Detroit high school students from the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy (JRLA) through its FATE program. This eight-year cohort-based program provides innovative programming blending project-based learning, character development, career introduction, and mentorship into a co-curricular experience that emphasizes the value of education and the role it plays in providing access to achieving long-term career and personal goals. Students begin the program in the 9th grade and participate through their college graduation.

One hundred percent of FATE students have graduated from high school and received acceptances to colleges/universities! Currently, approximately 150 youth are served by Give Merit's FATE HS and Alumni programs and Give Merit has awarded over $200,000 in scholarship funds.

  • Develop a deep knowledge of Merit’s/Give Merit’s history, purpose, and goals to create platforms for young people to create the future
  • Effectively perform mentor management functions to best support FATE mentors in their support of FATE students
  • Communicate effectively and timely to all individuals who may or are participating in the mentor program
  • Effectively utilize the systems and processes created to support recruitment, training, and relationship development
  • Conduct the applicable recruitment process to include informational sessions, application review, and interviews in a timely manner
  • Facilitate the initial and on-going mentor trainings
  • Ensure positive and effective mentor and mentee relationship development in accordance with programmatic expectations
  • Coordinate workshop logistics to include but not limited to mentor transportation, communication of workshop details, and mentor engagement
  • Provide University of Michigan student org advising and management
  • Work collaboratively with the Alumni program team to identify, select, and match former mentors with Fate Alumni as Alumni Success Coaches
  • Plan and coordinate events, as needed
  • Effectively support FATE high school programming to meet the needs of FATE student(s)
  • Uphold program mission, values, and goals while supporting the delivery of FATE programming
  • Establish and sustain a meaningful professional interpersonal relationship with students
  • Serve as a cohort lead support to include but not limited to workshop preparation, room setup and breakdown, material distribution, and student engagement
  • Provide support on special projects related to social media, CRM, events, or similar areas, as needed
  • Required to work some evenings and/or weekends in accordance with programmatic needs and/or events
  • Perform other duties as assigned

To qualify for this role, you must meet the following:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Experience with coordinating volunteers, youth, or events, a plus
  • Passion for serving the Detroit community, especially youth
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills
  • Extremely strong attention to details
  • Possess a strong ability to plan and organize activities
  • Exhibit an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, mentors, prospective mentors, and students
  • Understand the value of building and cultivating strong relationships
  • Must be able to work some evenings and/or weekends
  • Must exhibit a high sense of integrity
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Familiarity with Google applications (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive) preferred
