*An active U.S. Government Secret clearance is required for this position (Top Secret preferred).* Gentry is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer III to support the development of electronic warfare (EW) and RF systems for defense and aerospace applications. This is a full-time, W-2 position with Gentry Professional Services. The role is 100% onsite at a customer facility in the Rolling Meadows, IL area. Anticipated start: mid September 2026.

Description

In this role you will design, implement, and integrate embedded software that runs on target hardware in a real-time environment. You will work in C++11 alongside systems, hardware, and test engineers to take capabilities from requirements through integration and formal verification. This is hands-on work, expect to spend real time in the lab with the hardware, not just in the IDE.


Schedule: full-time schedule.


Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software in C++11 for real-time systems supporting EW and RF applications.
  • Integrate and debug software on target hardware, working directly with processors, interfaces, and lab test equipment.
  • Develop and execute unit, integration, and regression tests, and troubleshoot issues down to the hardware/software boundary.
  • Build and maintain scripts and tooling (Python, batch, and similar) to automate builds, test execution, and data reduction.
  • Translate system and software requirements into designs, and document interfaces, design decisions, and test results.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, and peer design reviews as a contributing member of a software team.
  • Collaborate with systems, hardware, and test engineering to resolve integration issues and support formal verification events.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and help improve team development, build, and test practices.


Basic Qualifications

  • STEM degree.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming in C++11.
  • Experience testing, debugging, and integrating embedded software on target hardware using a real-time operating system.
  • Active U.S. Government Secret clearance.


Preferred Qualifications

  • BS in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience testing, debugging, and integrating embedded software on target hardware using VxWorks.
  • Working knowledge of scripting languages (Python, batch, and similar).
  • Experience with software development methodologies and frameworks such as Agile in a team environment.
  • Active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance.
  • Demonstrated leadership and teamwork capability, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
