Friel, McCord & Smiley, LLC is a boutique Missouri law firm primarily focused on advising and representing electric cooperatives and other business clients. Our litigation work includes workers’ compensation defense, condemnation, civil litigation, and collections.

The Role

We’re looking for an associate to join our litigation practice and take responsibility for civil litigation matters referred to us by our clients. You’ll handle matters from intake through resolution, working with clients directly and with partner guidance as needed.

What You’ll Do

• Handle all steps in civil litigation, including drafting and arguing pleadings, motions, and discovery, and taking and defending depositions.
• Assist with workers’ compensation defense matters for electric cooperatives throughout Missouri.
• Assist in condemnation, easement, and other civil property matters
• Research and brief legal issues, and develop case strategy with the partners.
• Communicate with clients, including claims adjusters and cooperative managers, with timely, practical advice and regular status reporting.
• Some travel to courts and hearings across Missouri is required.

What We’re Looking For

• JD from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in Missouri and in good standing.
• 2+ years of litigation experience.
• Strong legal writing and research skills.
• Comfort with courtroom and hearing advocacy, or a strong desire to develop it.
• Good judgment and organization, with the ability to manage your own caseload and deadlines.

Preferred (Not Required)

• Missouri workers’ compensation experience.
• Experience in civil collections.
• 5+ years of litigation experience
