General Purpose of the Position

The Route Helper / General Laborer supports waste and recycling collection routes, litter cleanup, and property cleanup services. This position helps the crew complete assigned stops safely, keep service areas clean, and provide dependable service to our customers.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Assist the driver or route lead with collecting trash, recycling, bags, and other materials included in the assigned service.
• Move carts and containers to collection areas and return them to their designated locations.
• Pick up litter and loose debris from grounds, sidewalks, parking lots, and waste collection areas.
• Assist with bulk-item removal using appropriate equipment and team lifting.
• Load and unload materials, tools, and supplies as directed.
• Clean up spills and scattered debris created during collection.
• Report blocked access, overflowing containers, unsafe materials, property damage, and service issues to the route lead.
• Help keep vehicles, tools, equipment, and work areas clean and organized.
• Follow route instructions, customer property rules, and safety procedures.

Education and Experience

Applicants should be able to understand work instructions, follow safety procedures, and communicate clearly with the crew.

Experience in waste collection, groundskeeping, moving, construction cleanup, warehouse work, or general labor is helpful.

Skills and Qualifications

• Dependable attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to work cooperatively and follow directions.
• Attention to detail when collecting materials and cleaning service areas.
• Willingness to perform hands-on work around trash, recycling, dirt, and odors.
• Ability to recognize and report hazards rather than handle unfamiliar or unsafe materials without direction.
• Ability to use basic cleanup tools and assigned equipment safely after instruction.
• Ability to arrive at the assigned reporting location on time.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

This is an active position involving walking, standing, bending, reaching, gripping, lifting, carrying, and pushing or pulling carts and containers.

Work takes place outdoors and around collection vehicles and waste service areas. Conditions may include heat, cold, rain, uneven surfaces, noise, dust, and odors. Employees must follow safe lifting procedures, use assistance when needed, and wear required protective equipment.

Essential duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not supervise other employees and works under the direction of the assigned route lead or supervisor.
