Job Overview

Behavioral Health Technicians (BHTs) provide direct physical and behavioral health services to patients struggling with substance use disorders and/or mental health conditions. BHTs report to the Clinical Director or Lead Counselor and work alongside an interdisciplinary team including psychiatric providers, medical staff, counselors, and behavioral health specialists to support safe detoxification and ongoing treatment.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

·        Support patient admission, orientation, and daily treatment activities

·        Monitor patient behavior, whereabouts, and safety precautions

·        Conduct vital signs checks and specimen collection/testing when assigned

·        Assist with hygiene and daily living care as needed

·        Provide therapeutic support and use approved crisis de-escalation interventions

·        Document observations and interventions accurately in the EMR

·        Communicate patient concerns to the clinical team promptly

·        Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations in all aspects of client care. 

·        Oversee clients and their treatment schedules, delivering direct care according to established plans and protocols.

·        Promote a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment

·        Responsible for telephones and answering incoming inquiries regarding agency. 

·        Assist in case management activities to coordinate care across various services 

·        Assist with admissions, including searching patients and their belongings

·        Complete all charting, notes, and documentation before the end of the shift


Minimum Qualifications

·        High school diploma, GED or 1 year work experience

·        Must be 21 years of age or older


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

·        Understanding of substance use disorders, withdrawal symptoms, and detox protocols

·        Knowledge of co-occurring psychiatric conditions and behavioral responses

·        Ability to recognize signs of deterioration or emergency and alert clinical team

·        Proficient in crisis intervention and the use of de-escalation techniques


·        Therapeutic communication skills including active listening, empathy, and boundary-setting

·        Ability to facilitate basic therapeutic groups under supervision

·        Cultural sensitivity and awareness of how background influences treatment engagement


Competencies

·        Accurately record patient behavior, safety concerns, and care interventions

·        Apply safety measures and crisis intervention techniques according to policy

·        Follow clinical direction and support coordinated care across departments

·        Assist with structured activities and encourage treatment participation

·        Perform vital signs accurately and report abnormalities

·        Conduct drug screening and collection per protocol

·        Administer pregnancy testing per policy and ensure confidentiality


Physical Demands & Work Conditions

•        Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, and patient interaction

·        Exposure to patients experiencing withdrawal, agitation, or behavioral crisis

·        Exposure to bodily fluids, requiring use of PPE

Salary

$18.5 - $19.5 per hour
