Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America (FORA) is a refugee empowerment center based in the West Ridge neighborhood of Chicago. FORA provides almost 50,000 hours each year of individually customized High Impact Tutoring (HIT) to refugee SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) children. Our vision is a world where refugees in need are welcomed and empowered, and our mission is to ensure that refugee families are provided access to an education sufficient to prepare them to become economically self-sufficient and robustly engaged in American civic life.

Description

The High Impact Tutoring Education Officer (Part-time) supports FORA's High Impact Tutoring program. Responsibilities include:

Classroom Management:

  • Responsible for managing all aspects of operations in one of FORA classrooms.
  • Welcomes all students and tutors with warmth and ensures every student and tutor is seen.
  • Observes the room to identify if any tutor needs assistance with a student.
  • Walks the room for the entirety of the tutoring session to be able to effectively work with each student to establish mutual learning and behavioral goals to be included in the student’s lesson plan.
  • Is proficient in using Zoom and its features to effectively support tutors and students with online learning; including but not limited to managing meetings, checking attendance in rooms, troubleshooting tech and performance issues in real-time, and ensuring smooth communication during virtual tutoring sessions. 
  • Participates in the daily closing procedures of FORA after the last tutoring session.

Tutor and Student Interaction:

  • Instructs students and tutors on start time, break time, and end time for each tutoring session.
  • Mentors tutors on academic instruction. This includes instructing the tutors to but is not limited to: read and follow the directions for all work and all FORA routines, hold students to high standard of work, encourage students to speak aloud and describe what they are doing (and their reasoning process) while doing math, read and follow the blue sheet guidelines for their student when reading, and all students should read everything that they write out loud.
  • Speaks to students in a warm and kind manner and affirms the student's feelings. Provides support to students who are struggling during a session and praising students exhibiting positive behaviors.
  • Assesses the student to determine what support the student needs to be successful in school, what FORA activities are working and what are not working to incorporate in the student’s learning plan or to request assistance from the Family-School Partnership team.
  • Provides technical support or instruction to tutors on all learning apps. Responsible for communicating to the Director of High Impact Tutoring (HIT) technical issues as necessary before the end of the tutoring session.
  • Communicates in a timely and accurate manner to the Director of HIT to provide feedback regarding student and tutor interactions focusing on providing substantive information to support improved student conduct and educational progress.
  • Collaborates with the Director of HIT as appropriate to find ways to help students and optimize the classroom environment.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Attendance and punctuality are crucial to ensure the smooth start of sessions. The employee is expected to arrive ahead of student and tutor arrival time.


Communication Skills:

  • Exhibits excellent verbal communication skills for initiating conversations, actively listening to a person’s message, responding appropriately, and using tone of voice to convey respect.
  • Utilizes active listening skills to ensure students and tutors feel heard and listen for opportunities and needs.

The HIT Education Officer Part-Time must endorse, embrace, and enact FORA’s vision, mission, and values (as described at www.refugeefora.org). The position is for five hours per day, five days per week. During the school year, the hours generally are from 4:15 pm to 9:15 pm. During the summer, the hours are generally from 8:45 am to 1:45 pm. The location is in the West Ridge area of Chicago.
