Assistant Educator and Food Handler (NYC-ONLY, ALL BOROUGHS)

Compensation: $18 - $22 per hour, based on experience and certifications


Role Overview

Foodstream Learn is seeking an Assistant Educator and Food Handler to support hands-on cooking and nutrition programs delivered in NYC public schools.


This role assists Foodstream Educators during classroom sessions by preparing ingredients, maintaining food safety standards, organizing materials, and supporting cooking activities. The Assistant Educator helps ensure sessions run smoothly so Educators can focus on teaching and student engagement.


This role combines classroom program support with food preparation responsibilities in a fast-paced educational environment.


Program Delivery Support

• Assist Foodstream Educators during hands-on cooking and nutrition lessons

• Help set up classroom cooking stations and program materials before each session

• Support students during cooking activities by guiding safe food preparation

• Maintain organization of classroom materials and cooking tools during lessons

• Assist with classroom breakdown and cleanup following each session


Food Preparation and Safety

• Serve as the primary food handler during classroom cooking activities

• Wash, portion, and organize ingredients for lessons

• Maintain safe food handling, sanitation, and hygiene practices

• Ensure cooking equipment and workstations remain clean and organized

• Support adherence to school food safety and allergy guidelines


Program Coordination

• Work closely with Foodstream Educators and Program Managers to support lesson delivery

• Communicate supply needs or operational issues when they arise

• Support overall classroom readiness for cooking activities

Qualifications


Required

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Ability to follow food safety procedures and classroom protocols

• Ability to travel to schools across NYC boroughs as needed


Preferred

Food Handler’s Permit or Food Safety Certification (or willing to get it)

• Experience working in kitchens, culinary programs, or school environments

• Experience assisting youth programs or educational activities

• Bilingual English / Spanish


Hours and Contract Details

• Part-time contractor role based on school program schedules

• Hourly compensation of $18 – $22, depending on experience and certifications

• Opportunities to gain experience in food education and classroom programs
