The Labor Representative will be responsible for representing FOP members in various labor-related matters, including contract negotiations, grievance procedures, and disciplinary actions. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of labor laws, collective bargaining, and the unique challenges faced by law enforcement personnel. The territory for this position will cover the Central Florida East coastline (Ormond Beach south to Palm Bay).
Key Responsibilities:
- Contract Negotiation:
- Prepare for and participate in collective bargaining negotiations with public employers.
- Research and analyze salary and benefit data to ensure fair compensation for officers.
- Draft and review contract language to protect the interests of FOP members.
- Disciplinary and Grievance Representation:
- Represent officers in administrative / internal affairs investigations, disciplinary hearings, and other grievance procedures.
- Investigate complaints of unfair labor practices or contract violations.
- Labor Relations:
- Provide guidance and advice to FOP members on labor-related issues.
- Conduct training sessions for members on their rights and benefits under collective bargaining agreements and labor laws.
- Stay informed of changes in labor laws and regulations that may affect law enforcement officers.
- Membership Engagement:
- Build and maintain relationships with FOP members to understand their concerns and priorities.
- Attend FOP meetings and events to represent the Labor Relations Department.
- Recruit new members to the FOP by highlighting the benefits of union representation.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with FOP members, union leadership, and external stakeholders.
- Assist in the preparation and presentation of cases before arbitrators, mediators, and other relevant bodies.
- Collaborate with legal counsel and other professionals to ensure comprehensive representation of members’ interests.
- Stay informed about current events, legislative changes, and other developments that may impact labor relations and law enforcement.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in labor relations, collective bargaining, or a related field, with 5+ years preferred. Experience representing law enforcement / corrections personnel.
- Strong knowledge of labor laws, collective bargaining processes, grievance procedures, and Law Enforcement Officer / Correctional Officer Bill of Rights.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyze complex issues, develop strategic solutions, and advocate effectively on behalf of members.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to travel as needed within the assigned territory and occasionally within the state of Florida.
- Commitment to the mission and values of the Florida State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police.
Additional Requirements:
- Labor Representative will be on-call 24/7 for critical incidents and will be expected to respond to the scene along with an FOP attorney.
- Must live within the assigned territory assigned territory of Central Florida East coastline (Ormond Beach south to Palm Bay).
