First German United Methodist Church is an historically German- and English-speaking congregation of the United Methodist Church based in Glendale, California. In times past, the Church was a place of worship and rest in the heart of Los Angeles for first-generation immigrants from the German-speaking world. That said, First German United Methodist Church has never been monocultural. From its early days, FGUMC has played host to followers of Jesus from all over the world. Job Summary:

The Church Administrative Assistant position is a part-time, hourly position estimated at 20 hours per week. This is a support position of the office of the Pastor. The Church Administrative Assistant manages day-to-day office clerical duties and church communications, including the church’s signage and social media.


Job Responsibilities & Duties

  • Answer & Screen all incoming calls, routing them to the appropriate leaders when available or taking messages.
  • Oversees all mail correspondence with sensitivity and confidentiality.
  • Maintains an orderly and clean office and filing system, and processes all information requests.
  • Manages the Church’s schedule, accounting for all religious holidays, appointments with the pastor, events at the church, and weddings.
  • Creates & Publishes church bulletin weekly, prepares presentation slides for services, creates posters for sermon series, special events, and mailers as needed.
  • Maintains the church website and social media presence.
  • Utilize Church management software to track the activities, engagement, and tithing of the Congregation.
  • Work with the pastor to maintain fastidious church files.


Job Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Associate's/Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • At least two years clerical or administrative experience preferred. Bonus if previous experience working at a Church.
  • Must be committed to the church’s mission and message.
  • Must be a self-starter in their approach to administration.
  • Must work well as part of a church team.
  • Must be courteous and tactful with parishioners and staff members.
  • Must exercise exceptional judgment in dealing with sensitive and personal issues.
  • Ability to handle light bookkeeping preferred.
  • Must be able to prioritize concerns, at times without much guidance
  • Must be comfortable working with technology and social media.
  • Must be able to interact well with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Must be able to work occasional weekends, services, and special events. Not required to be in worship every Sunday. 
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Organized, with an attention to detail.
  • Professional, able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.

Organizational Relationship & Supervision:

This position reports to the Pastor. The Pastor, in cooperation with the Staff Parish Relations Committee, will provide an annual evaluation of the bookkeeper’s performance. This person will be responsible and subject to United Methodist policy and doctrine and local church policy as determined by the Charge Conference, Pastor, Board of Trustees, and Staff Parish Relations Committee.
