Description

Veterinary Technician Responsibilities

  • Patient examinations, auscultation of heart and lung sounds, determine normal/abnormal TPRs
  • Professional client communication and education obtaining medical histories and symptoms
  • Laboratory procedures including but not limited to: hematology, cytology, urinalysis, microbiology, blood chemistry, and fecal
  • Diagnostic imaging and implementing safety protocols of fellow staff members
  • Surgical assisting; preparing and maintaining the surgical environment in order to ensure an asepsis environment for both patient and personal safety.
  • Anesthesia monitoring and endotracheal intubation
  • Nursing skills including: restraining patients, administering medications PO/IV/SUBQ/IM, placing intravenous catheters, obtaining blood samples, applying and maintaining bandages, providing high quality physical and psychological needs of the patient during any hospitalization stay or visit
  • Proficient in dental prophylaxis
  • Pharmacy and pharmacology knowledge including: preparing and dispensing medications, calculating dosages, recognizing adverse reactions, knowledge of regulations regarding the safe handling of biohazardous materials

Required Skills

Veterinary Technician Qualifications

  • Must be licensed as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or must be proficient with technician skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and as team member.
  • Must enjoy working with both people and animals.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods and lift at least 50 pounds..
  • Natural leadership ability is a plus.

Working Conditions

  • Have the physical strength and ability to stand for an entire shift when needed, and be able to lift, push and pull, pets and objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Assist in lifting patients weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Technician is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.
  • Have physical mobility and dexterity to frequently stand, walk bend, push, twist, kneel, climb, squat, stoop, and reach overhead
  • The noise level in the work environment can be moderately high.
  • Must wear closed-toe shoes, gloves, and other protective items as required.
  • A consistent and reliable presence at work is required.
