Position Summary

The Payroll & Accounting Specialist is responsible for processing payroll from start to finish for multiple school district and municipal clients supported by EDM. In addition to payroll responsibilities, this position will support the broader accounting function through bank reconciliations, financial reporting, and audit preparation. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, and able to manage multiple priorities independently in a remote environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with payroll staff to train on the existing payroll process and thoroughly review documented procedures.
  • Execute a smooth transition to assume full payroll processing responsibilities based on mutually agreed-upon deadlines and workflows.
  • Support the process of the payroll, accurately computing employee pay, deductions, and unpaid leave into the payroll software.  Serving as a back up to the system and training new staff on the process.  
  • Perform comprehensive system checks and balances to guarantee the accuracy of payroll disbursements, employee withholdings, remittances, and reporting.
  • Maintain payroll reports and statements for each cycle, preparing requested analytical wage reports.
  • Maintain and update payroll-related computer records and formats.
  • Prepare and submit all required tax reports, filings, and reconciliations related to Federal taxes, Social Security, State Income taxes, local taxes, and state unemployment taxes (SUTA) in a timely manner.
  • Administer proper reconciliation and ensure the timely preparation and delivery of employee W-2s.
  • Assist with general school district accounting and financial reporting to ensure state and local compliance.
  • Provide dedicated support for annual audit preparation, gathering necessary documentation and reports.
  • Contribute to budget development processes and assist in forecasting district expenditures.
  • Perform regular financial reconciliations to maintain accurate and balanced general ledgers.
  • Other duties as assigned in support of EDM client needs.  


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience in payroll processing, payroll tax compliance, and general accounting. Experience working with school districts or in fund accounting is highly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of payroll systems such as Skyward, CSIU, Tyler, Prosoft, or PowerSchool.
  • Strong understanding of payroll laws, reporting, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Google Workspace, and general accounting principles.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong analytical capabilities, and excellent communication skills for cross-team collaboration.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines.
