The Dose Of News Useful Today was founded in 2019 to provide an antidote to negative, sensationalist, and one-sided news, and remains the only news source to combine trustworthy, impartial info with a healthy dose of optimism and wit. In a nutshell, we’re what you’d get if you blended Walter Cronkite with Mr. Rogers and added a dash of comedy.

We have 100,000+ daily Gen Z and millennial readers and are growing fast. At the moment, we send out two email newsletters: 1) The Daily DONUT, our flagship newsletter covering the most impactful news of the day and 2) Positive DONUT, a weekly newsletter that aims to find and elevate the good in the world, as well as provide simple tools to improve our collective mental health.

We're seeking journalists with a sense of humor to write clear, concise, and engaging stories that’ll appear in our Daily DONUT newsletter. The ideal candidate for this role is a skilled, imaginative writer with an eye for detail and a hunger for career advancement. We’re a young, fast-growing media startup looking for dedicated individuals to grow into senior roles.

Job Description

We’re seeking part-time freelance journalists to write news articles about their topics of expertise for our flagship suite of products. You will work closely with our team of editors to create and deliver high-quality news content that meets weekly deadlines. Your role will play a crucial role in building a next-gen news media company.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Develop well-researched pitches and submit to an editor for review, putting aside personal opinions so as to remain as unbiased as humanly possible
• Turn those pitches into ~200-word news articles aligning to The DONUT Style Guide
• Revise work based on editorial feedback
• Ensure timely completion of assigned tasks within the 10-hour weekly schedule.
• Maintain regular communication with the team regarding progress and availability within the specified hours. Flexibility in scheduling is available. 

Qualifications

• Preferably 5 or more years of writing and editing experience at a newsletter-focused publication.
• Prior experience with creative writing/copywriting/comedic writing/stand-up comedy/improv preferred.
• An exceptional written communicator.
• Training in how to tell a story using words, images, or audio, and an understanding of how to create content that draws an audience.
• An entrepreneurial spirit who truly wants to help build a next-gen media company to positively impact the world.
• Ability to execute regular job duties whether you’re in a Starbucks, airport terminal, or home office.
• The ability to remove yourself from your work, take feedback, and apply it.
• ABOVE ALL: You must be insatiably curious with a love and passion for learning new things. Effort trumps experience in our book.

Job Location

• Work remotely with consistent daily communication with The DONUT team.
