Job Description: 

DHTI is hiring an Outreach Worker to work with Middle Eastern communities in Alameda County with a focus on those that speak Arabic. Community engagement includes cultivating relationships with community leaders and members, conducting home visits to reach isolated individuals and family members as needed, providing individual preventive and problem-solving meetings, and developing and disseminating health and wellness materials. Additionally, the Outreach Worker supports group activities, including wellness/support groups, workshops, and community events. 

 

Supervision and Support: 

The Outreach Worker will report directly to the Sidra Program Manager. The Outreach Worker will also work closely with Sidra’s other Outreach Workers, Mental Health Specialists, and Clinical Supervisor. 

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 


  1. Work with community members and groups to identify wellness priorities and needs, to develop strategies for addressing those needs, and to connect communities to relevant resources and opportunities.  
  2. Assist and/or facilitate Support Groups using cultural knowledge and practices.  
  3. Work to build support and visibility for Middle Eastern communities locally. 
  4. Work with team members to develop outreach materials and resources (e.g., newsletters, brochures, directories, newspapers, websites, etc.), stage outreach and engagement activities, and systems change campaigns with the community. 
  5. Widely distribute promotional and outreach materials in Alameda County. 
  6. Participate in planning and development of health and wellness programming, events, and/or campaigns in the community. 
  7. Conduct and/or coordinate relevant psychoeducation and culture-based educational workshops for community members, groups, partners, and systems. 
  8. Conduct home visits (as needed) to reach isolated individuals and family members.  
  9. Provide mental health referrals to community members as needed. 
  10. Complete all documentation of the project required by DHTI and the project’s funder. 
  11. Assist Program Manager with gathering data for internal and external reports and maintenance of program and organizational files for proper documentation.  
  12. Assist Sidra team to timely submit Purchase Requests and travel mileage for proper reimbursement of expenses.  
  13. Submit service reports to the County through the designated County system. 
  14. Support agency-wide activities and other duties as assigned. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, community health, and community capacity building.  
  • Experience in community organizing, advocacy, social justice, public health, mental health, or a related field; 
  • Familiarity with mental health, substance abuse and related issues, especially as these impact un- and underserved Middle Eastern communities; 
  • Well-versed in local city, county, and community human/social services systems and local community-based resources serving Middle Eastern communities; 
  • Must be able to work in and around Oakland, but also travel for work related responsibilities to other parts of Alameda County and counties where many Middle Eastern communities and community events take place;    
  • Professional proficiency in English and Arabic languages. Familiarity with Middle Eastern language(s) and cultures. Strong bilingual communications skills. Bilingual and bicultural to serve Middle Eastern communities; 
  • Independent worker, initiative-taker, strong problem-solver under pressure; 
  • Empathy for, interest in, and sensitivity to people from a multiplicity of backgrounds (ethnic, religious, social class, sexual orientation, etc.), with core awareness and sensitivity to the cultures and needs of Middle Eastern communities.  
  • Experience with collaboration and teamwork, and interest in working across communities in areas of common concern; 
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills; 
  • Openness to feedback and supervision/support; 
  • A good team player, open to collaboration; 
  • Valid California driver’s license and access to vehicle;  
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent experience 

  

Preferred:   

  • Training, certifications, and/or degrees in behavioral/mental health, community health, and/or public health; 
  • Prior experience working with Middle Eastern communities in Alameda County and the Bay Area;  
  • Experience and familiarity with community mental health delivery of service.  

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

The predominant work environments for this position include fieldwork (including Oakland and Fremont areas), home visits, and outreach in multiple settings as needed, and weekly in DHTI’s Oakland office. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed. May work two days a week remotely from home.

In the course of performing this job, the employee typically spends time sitting, standing, walking, typing, filing, listening and speaking.
