Current Hiring Priorities

For current hiring needs, this role requires the ability to independently complete manual accessibility audits using a screen reader as the primary method of accessing digital content. We are looking for individuals who regularly use a screen reader as their primary means of accessing digital content and systems.


Desired Results

Successful applicants will produce the following results


  • Leverage practical experience using assistive technology or adaptive techniques to accurately identify WCAG 2.1 A/AA success criteria that have or have not been met on websites and mobile applications. Audits are performed using real-world accessibility workflows and techniques, not simulated testing methods.
  • Compiling findings into approved company reporting format.
  • Utilize established company processes to provide accurate remediation recommendations and guidance for WCAG criteria that have not been met based on the current implementation of features or elements.
  • Written recommendations and guidance must be clear and understandable to developers, designers, QA testers, product owners, legal teams, and executive leadership.
  • Communicate accessibility barriers, user impact, and remediation guidance to clients in a professional and patient manner during service meetings.


 Skills, Traits and Competencies

Applicant Minimal Skills, Traits and Competencies

  • 2+ years of lived experience using assistive technologies or adaptive techniques as part of routine access to websites, software, or mobile devices (e.g., screen readers, magnification, voice recognition tools).
  • 1-2 years of experience performing manual accessibility audits for websites, software, mobile applications, or digital content.
  • Prior experience, demonstrated knowledge, or education regarding:
  • Data analysis, extrapolation, and reporting methods, including analytical software.
  • Automated accessibility testing procedures for web sites, software, and online venues.
  • Explaining the accessibility requirements associated with the WCAG 2.1 level A/AA principles and guidelines to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to read and understand basic HTML markup, JavaScript and CSS.
  • User interface web design concepts and principles when designing for users with disabilities (e.g., styling and readability, layout, navigation, focus indicators, color contrast, use of color, etc.)
  • Verification of the conformance of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) up to 2.1 level A/AA. (Level 2.2 a plus)
  • Demonstrated understanding of the application of internationally recognized accessibility guidelines including WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to digital formats.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and expressive (the ability to speak is not necessarily required).
  • Ability to work well within a team setting.
  • Ability to simultaneously take work direction and to work autonomously.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ARIA and its use.


Applicant Preferred Skills, Traits and Competencies

  • International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) certification.
  • Familiarity with mobile interfaces and mobile accessibility considerations.
  • Prior experience, demonstrated knowledge, or education regarding user-experience testing.
  • Successful experience working in virtual office or remote workplace environments.
  • Prior experience, in either a professional or volunteer setting, interacting with people who live with disabilities.
  • Lived experience, demonstrated knowledge, or education regarding assistive computer technology and devices (e.g., screen readers, screen magnifiers, voice recognition software and alternative input devices.)


Other Information regarding the role

Position Length and Time Commitment

This position is designed to serve as a periodic contract arrangement, depending upon the needs of our company. Our aim is to build a long-term contract relationship with experienced Manual Accessibility Audit Contractors who can successfully deliver accurate manual audit results within deadlines, during peak periods of client project demand. 

Time commitments depend upon the project and will be negotiated with a given contractor’s availability.


Location

Remote through virtual office interface on Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
