This position supports the U.S. Army DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center (AvMC) Technology Development Directorate at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, neighboring Huntsville, AL.
Job Description
The Environmental Engineer supports government environmental compliance programs by providing technical expertise, regulatory guidance, and programmatic assistance. The role involves technical evaluation, reporting support, inspections, training, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
The individual works closely with government personnel, regulatory agencies, and organizational leadership to support environmental compliance, effective communication of requirements, and continuous program improvement.
Job duties may include some or all of the following:
Environmental Compliance & Technical Support
- Apply and further develop skills in leadership, organization, time management, and regulatory compliance
- Provide technical and regulatory guidance to personnel to support compliance with environmental laws and policies
- Support execution of environmental programs in accordance with federal, state, and Army regulatory frameworks
Air Emissions Program Support
- Support the government-led AvMC Air Emissions Program
- Assist in ensuring emissions remain within regulatory limits and requirements
- Support evaluation of new and existing projects for air emissions impacts and compliance requirements
- Assist in preparation and submission of emissions reports to Garrison for submittal to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM)
- Provide advisory support in the inspections conducted by higher headquarters, Environmental Performance Assessments (EPAS), and ADEM
Hazardous Materials Management & Laboratory Safety Support
- Support hazardous materials compliance including storage, tracking, and inventory control
- Assist in ensuring laboratory safety requirements are followed, coordinating with Industrial Hygiene as needed
- Support implementation and execution of hazardous material inventory systems, including development and delivery of training
- Conduct internal audits and support external inspections to ensure compliance
Hazardous Waste & Environmental Waste Program Support
- Support the AvMC waste management program including hazardous waste, non-regulated waste, recyclable materials, and sanitary sewer disposal
- Assist in ensuring compliance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
- Provide advisory assistance as it pertains to internal audits and inspections
- May support development and delivery of RCRA training and coordination with Garrison Environmental
Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) Program Support
- May support the Hazard Communication Program in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200
- May assist in development and delivery of HAZCOM training
- Support proper labeling, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) management, and employee awareness
Regulatory Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement
- Provide advisory assistance in coordinating with RSA Garrison Environmental Management Division, ADEM, EPA, and Army environmental compliance organizations
- Communicate requirements and provide compliance assistance
- Support inspections, audits, and regulatory engagements to ensure program transparency and compliance
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field
- Demonstrated experience supporting environmental compliance programs
- Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations (e.g., RCRA, Clean Air Act, OSHA HAZCOM)
- Experience conducting inspections, audits, and regulatory reporting
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams
- U.S. Citizenship required; ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
Desired Skills and Experience
- Master’s degree in an Environmental field
- Experience supporting DoD or Army environmental programs
- Familiarity with ADEM regulatory processes and reporting requirements
- Experience with Environmental Performance Assessments (EPAS)
- Background in laboratory safety and Industrial Hygiene coordination
- Experience developing and delivering training programs
- Experience implementing environmental tracking or inventory systems
Work Schedule
- Part-time
- Hours may vary from 0 to 40 hours per week depending on mission requirements and employee availability
- Anticipated average workload of approximately 15 hours per week
