The Consultant/Senior Consultant will contribute quantitative and qualitative analysis on state-level gas and electric utility policies, programs and regulatory filings that impact greenhouse gas emissions, gas utility customer rates, gas utility planning, building efficiency and electrification, and a transition to clean heat in buildings.

The Consultant, or Senior Consultant, will report to the Manager of the Gas Transition practice. The Gas Transition team works with clients on state-level gas and electric utility policies, programs and regulatory filings that impact greenhouse gas emissions, gas utility customer rates, gas utility planning, building efficiency and electrification, and a transition to clean heat in buildings. The Consultant/Senior Consultant will contribute quantitative and qualitative analysis on these topics and develop and communicate creative solutions while ensuring that client expectations are met. 

 

Responsibilities 

Project Work: 

  • Assist Current Energy Group’s (CEG) consulting practice in executing client projects with a primary focus on regulated natural gas utility economics and policy analysis. Subject matter experience may include building decarbonization, gas utility regulation, cost of service and rate design. This position may also work on electric utility regulatory proceedings approximately 10 - 20% of their time.  
  • Assist in the development of technical work products within the context of overall client project goals. 
  • Review and interpret comments or testimony submitted in regulatory proceedings and develop arguments with evidence that can either support or rebut the issues.  
  • Draft discovery requests to utilities and other parties to regulatory proceedings to probe their proposals and identify data and information to make informed recommendations and critiques.  
  • Draft memos and comments to support client positions in regulatory cases. 
  • Research policy, regulations, and tariffs; summarize research via memo or presentation; and communicate research to internal and external audiences with varying levels of technical expertise. 
  • Develop insights into best practices and policy recommendations for different regulatory stakeholders specific to the client scope and context.  
  • Conduct qualitative or quantitative analysis to understand the economics of different strategies and business models in various retail and wholesale markets.  
  • Help prepare senior team members for client meetings and presentations.  
  • Collaborate with team members in scoping and writing proposals for clients and responding to client requests. 
  • Help the team with general operational tasks and internal projects for organizational improvement as needed. 
  • Self-manage time and communicate regularly with your supervisor and other members of the team to manage expectations about timing and quality of work.  
  • Prioritize multiple competing internal and external demands to ensure successful delivery across a portfolio of projects.  
  • Act as a critical thinker and decision-maker in addressing challenges and finding solutions.  

 

Desired Qualifications 

  • Consultant 
  • 2 – 3 years of general industry experience, with a preference for building decarbonization or electric or gas utility regulation, or an advanced degree in energy and environmental policy, economics, engineering, or a related field.  
  • Strong quantitative skills and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams.  
  • Background or experience in technical or legal writing and research.  
  • Proficient in multitasking and prioritizing critical tasks while managing conflicting demands under tight deadlines.  
  • Senior Consultant 
  • 4 - 6 years of general industry experience, with a preference for building decarbonization or electric or gas utility regulation, or an advanced degree in energy and environmental policy, economics, engineering, or a related field. An advanced degree may satisfy 2 years of experience.  
  • 2 – 3 years of experience in technical or legal writing and research. 
  • Demonstrated strong quantitative skills and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel. 
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams.  
  • Proficient in multitasking and prioritizing critical tasks while managing conflicting demands under tight deadlines.

Salary:  

Consultant: $86,000-$115,000 

Senior Consultant: $103,000-$125,000 

 

Salary negotiable and will be commensurate with experience
