Craftsbury Outdoor Center Youth Ski Coaches Craftsbury Common, VT · Part time

Seeking ski coaches to assist with our youth ski programs. Programs server approximately 200 skiers aged 6-18, from absolute beginners to the internationally competitive.

Description

Do you like cross-country skiing? Do you like working with kids? Do you have a free hour or two on winter weekday afternoons or Sundays?

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center is seeking several very part-time coaches to assist with our youth ski programs for the winter of 2023-2024. These programs serve approximately 200 skiers ages 6-18, from absolute beginners to those who are internationally competitive. Our assistant coaches help our head coaches conduct fun and safe practices for kids. We’re recruiting coaches primarily for our Catamounts and Bill Koch League programs, but would love to hear from anyone interested in working with older kids as well.

Assistant coaches can help as little as just one practice per week or as often as 2-3 times per week. We have openings for both paid and volunteer coaches, both of which are eligible for discounts on program fees and/or season-long equipment rentals for their kids. Parent-coaches are typically placed with groups that do not include their own children. COC provides SafeSport training for all assistant coaches and also provides an opportunity to get First Aid/CPR certification.

Requirements for assistant coaches include the following:

  • The ability to consistently show up on time to help with practices as committed. Currently anticipated needs for coaching help are on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from ~3:15pm to ~4:45pm and Sundays in both the mornings and early afternoon.
  • Comfort cross-country skiing, both classic and skate techniques
  • The ability to help teach beginners how to ski
  • Experience working with elementary/middle school aged children
  • Preparedness for all types of weather
  • Ability to work with varied abilities and attitudes
  • Willingness to obtain certification in CPR/First Aid and SafeSport
  • A positive, learning-focused attitude that does not emphasize results

The ideal assistant coach also:

  • Loves skiing
  • Loves working with kids and has lots of energy and enthusiasm
  • Enjoys (or at least doesn’t mind) wearing silly hats or perhaps tutus
  • Has prior experience with cross-country skiing instruction
  • Can troubleshoot gear issues
  • Is organized and can maintain order in chaotic settings
  • Can adapt on the fly to adjust for inclement weather and other unexpected obstacles

Interested? Fill out this form no later than October 1, 2023. Indicating your interest is not a commitment at this point! Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Got questions? Send them to junior program director Anna Schulz: [email protected]
